Subject: A tip for mastering the bench press

Cueing an exercise or movement falls into two categories: internal cueing or external cueing. Internal cueing can be thought of as instructions on what to do with a body part or a muscle we want to activate, cues like keeping the elbow bent at 90 degrees or tensing the glute to extend the hip. External cueing changes the focus to how the movement interacts with the environment, with pushing the ground away during a deadlift or reaching towards a fixed point being examples.

The subject goes far beyond what we can cover in a newsletter, but a quick search for folks like Nick Winkleman and Bill Parisi will give you a lot to work with.

External cueing can change the intent of an exercise. The action or goal of how we interact with the environment can be targeted to enhance a lift. Fabio Zonin, StrongFirst Certified Master Instructor, provides two great external cues for the bench press below.

Mastering the Bench Press with Intent

The bench press is way more than just pushing the bar up.

For instance, if I could disconnect my triceps tendons and focus on squeezing my upper arms together, the bar would still rise, as the pecs alone can do it.

On the flip side. If I could disconnect my pecs and focus on extending my elbows, the bar would still rise, as the triceps alone can do it.

This means you’re not locked into a single pattern, but you have options.

Crush the bar inward, and you fire up your pecs.

Try to tear the bar apart, and you will engage your triceps.

It’s not just about feeling the muscle; it’s a strategy!

If you are stuck coming off the chest? Squeeze inward!

If you’re stuck moving towards the lockout? Pull the bar apart!

Same lift, different intent!

Bench press power to you!
