July Newsletter: Staying Connected & Looking Ahead

Highlights from across the network with a look ahead to our 2025 conference, plus your monthly update on community news, projects, and upcoming events.

Dear Friend

With summer well underway, I hope you’ve all been able to enjoy some of the unpredictable Scottish sun, or have been lucky enough to take some time to recharge abroad.

This newsletter includes a mix of reflections on recent projects and events and looks ahead to what we have in store for the latter half of 2025. With many of our team taking time away from their desks to holiday with their kids or get soaked at festivals, this edition of the Staf newsletter is lighter in content than most months. We hope it still gives you a sense of the momentum building across the sector as we move through the second half of the year.

Plans are well under way for our 2025 annual conference, Thriving Together in Complexity, and tickets are already on sale. We’re also inviting submissions for workshops, creative sessions and presentations — if you have something to share, we’d love to hear from you.

Across our networks, we continue to see thoughtful conversations, inspiring practice and a shared commitment to improving the lives of care experienced young people. Whether you were an attendee at the Participation Network event held in late June, have contributed to one of our recent projects, or support us from afar, your involvement is invaluable in helping us deliver on our mission.

As always, if you or a young person you support would like to get involved in any of our projects or attend any of our events, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are always looking for fresh faces and perspectives to contribute valuable insights and share their knowledge and creativity.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We hope you enjoy what’s left of the summer, whatever it looks like for you.

Best wishes,
Jo Derrick
Chief Executive

Thriving Together in Complexity: Deepening relationship-based practice with young people at the heart.

Participation Network Gathering

Thinking Outside the Tick Box: Moving Beyond Consultations and Surveys

In late June, we hosted another fantastic gathering of the Participation Network. This time, the focus was on ‘thinking outside the tick box’ and how we can move away from generic methods of participation, such as consultations and surveys, towards more creative and meaningful ways to promote engagement.

The sold-out event featured speakers from our incredible steering group, along with guests from Starcatchers, Glass Performance and Media Education. As always, the event encouraged connection and inspiration. If you're interested in contributing to or attending our next gathering, sign up to our mailing list.

Young People at the Heart of the Participation Network Event: Winging It! a youth-led animation about the REAL Toolkit

At our Participation Network event, members of the REAL Toolkit Development Group, Reece, Cheryle, and Danny, took centre stage, delivering two inspiring workshops shaped by their own experiences and creativity. These young people, some feeling nervous but all determined, brought energy, honesty, and a fresh perspective to the day.

Reece designed two sessions with our Learning and Development Lead, Maggie, and Participation Manager, Ruth. Together, they wrote thought-provoking questions for a carousel of tabletop discussions, debated music choices to accompany a competitive paper plane challenge and energiser (Beyoncé versus Lopez versus Charli XCX).

All three delivered a short presentation offering a real insight into why the group created and voiced Winging It!, their youth-led animation about the REAL Toolkit and the benefits of taking part.

You can watch this animation below.

As Reece put it:

“It’s all good and well having a voice—what matters is, how you use it and who hears you and acts on it.  I’m going to college and I’m going to be first in my family to go to university. These kind of events and projects give me opportunities to use my voice,  believe in my own strengths and skills while hopefully improving things for other young people who have experience of care and justice"

Cheryle and Danny brought humour, warmth to their reflections. Cheryle kicked things off with:

“Sadly, D’s not with us today (don’t worry, he’s just moved house—that sounds bad, but it’s not fatal!)."

She spoke about working remotely with peers across Scotland—from Dumfries to Shetland—sharing experiences of navigating services, building confidence, and stepping out of comfort zones.

The workshops sparked meaningful conversations. Practitioners from throughcare, residential and youth work teams reflected on the animation and discussed how they are working to involve young people more meaningfully in shaping services.

And in Reece’s words:

“Attendees gave great suggestions to help make the REAL Toolkit and animation more inclusive—especially for people whose first language isn’t English. On the day, we were overwhelmed with the warm response and invitations to showcase again at various events being hosted by organisations like the Children’s Hearing System, Scotland and various local authority throughcare teams and champions boards.”

Got something to share on the Hub?

Please get in touch with dawn@staf.scot

The Steering Group recently reviewed expressions of interest for project funding, with several organisations now invited to submit full applications. Alongside this, members also shared reflections on two NLN-funded projects: the Stirling Champions Board and MCR Pathways. Feedback on both was positive and heartfelt, highlighting the real impact of the work so far.

As part of their wider involvement, Steering Group members have also been active in sharing learning and experiences. Steven had a blog published this month, reflecting on his experience delivering leadership sessions in HMP Polmont. You can read it here: Good Leadership: From the Inside Out

We also said goodbye to Harley, a long-standing and valued member of the Steering Group. He is stepping back due to work and study commitments, and we are hugely grateful for all he has contributed, from shaping strategy to bringing energy and humour to the team.

Change has also come within the NLN staff team, as we said farewell to Lisa this month. A few of us gathered for a small send-off to thank her for all her work. We wish her all the best in her new role. Recruitment for her post is now under way. For more information, contact gary@thenln.org.

Meanwhile, the Consultants have been keeping things lively with a fantastic NLN General Knowledge Quiz, organised and hosted by Kira and Renee. The evening brought together guests from CELCIS, MCR Pathways, the Fostering Network and others, and was a real hit with everyone involved.

Looking ahead, the Consultants are now developing plans for an in-person NLN event focused on sharing stories, learning and impact. They will be reaching out to the wider network to help shape this as things progress.

NLN is also contributing to national work, including OHOV’s Beyond the Surface guide and the Rural Health Equity Stakeholder Group. In both spaces, we are proud to ensure lived experience is placed at the heart of wider conversations about care, community and wellbeing.
