What's coming up at Staf and how you can get involved

February 2026 newsletter

Dear Friend

As we start to see the first signs of spring, it’s been inspiring to see the continued energy, creativity and commitment across the Staf community. February has been a busy month, with members, partners and young people coming together to share ideas, build connections, and keep the momentum going behind the Moving On Route Map and the wider work to support care experienced people across Scotland.

In this edition, you’ll find updates on our upcoming forums and focus groups, opportunities to get involved, and highlights from some of the fantastic work happening across our projects. From creative projects and outdoor adventures with Youth Just Us, to the launch of new resources and learning opportunities, there’s plenty to explore and celebrate.

As always, thank you for being part of the Staf community and for the vital work you do every day.

With warm wishes

Jo Derrick
Chief Executive

Join us to celebrate the launch of the Friendship Anthology

The Binks Hub is hosting a free online event on Tuesday 31 March to launch a new anthology on the theme of friendship - a collection of poetry, stories, reflections and visual art created by care experienced people across Scotland.

The anthology grew from the Transforming Friendship Focused Support Project and includes submissions from an open call issued by Staf last summer.

Friendships are a source of care, love and hope for people of all ages. Yet the experience of being in care can make sustaining friendships harder than it should be. By sharing and celebrating the creativity in this anthology, we take a step toward changing that, together.

Come and join us in celebrating these words.

Staf focus groups and forums

We are working across our forums and focus groups to engage with Staf members as we implement the Moving On Route Map.

Dates for the year ahead are live on our website

You can now book onto the meetings coming up from March to June

Please email victoria@staf.scot if you have a question or topic you would like to see covered. You can also get in touch to be added to the Teams channel for these groups.

Care Leavers into Employment, Education and Training Focus Group

Tuesday 9 June 2026

Youth Just Us make waves and plant roots

Members of Youth Just Us, our steering group for people with care and justice experience in Glasgow, recently took part in two outdoor sessions with Venture Trust Scotland through their Cashback Green Futures programme.

The group spent a full day canoeing on Loch Lomond, building confidence, teamwork and resilience (and lasting over three hours on the water - much longer than first expected)! A second day focused on conservation work, where members planted an incredible 400 trees in a local park, contributing to a greener space for future generations.

The sessions offered more than new experiences - they strengthened bonds, built confidence and created space for reflection, fun and achievement outside the usual participation setting.

Huge thanks to Venture Trust Scotland for making it happen.

Read more about our sessions in our latest blog post.

A creative new collection from the North East

In summer 2025, our Youth Justice Voices North East group set out to unleash their creative instincts in a new format.

Working with Aberdeen Poet Jo Gilbert, the group spent 4 weeks together, listening, creating, and exploring poetry and spoken word.

This new collection, which we launched on Care Day 2026, gathers together all the pieces our participants created, ready to share with the world. You can watch it below (pause to read) or read more about it and view the collection as a PDF here.

February was a busy and reflective month for the National Leadership Network (NLN).

Members of the Steering Group met in Perth and online to review proposals for the external evaluation of the NLN. Applications were scored and discussed using an agreed process, and details of the successful proposal will be shared soon. Steering Group members have also signed new contracts through to January 2027 and are now formally recognised as Consultants within the NLN Steering Group.

The team engaged in a number of events and partnerships this month. Representatives attended Project Change’s The Way Forward event, contributed to discussions with Falkirk Champs about their upcoming Care Revolution – young voices leading the way event in April, and met with the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration following last year’s Staf conference. Further engagement included participation in the Lived Experience Network Scotland (LENS) session, ongoing involvement in the Participation Network, and early conversations with Compass and MCR Pathways about potential collaboration.

Looking to the future, members took part in a session on The Jigsaw report, exploring its findings and reflecting on the impact of the NLN to date. A companion report, Beyond the Pieces, has also been produced to support thinking about the Network’s direction beyond 2026. Feedback on both reports is welcomed.

The team has begun developing a workshop for this year’s Children in Scotland conference, titled Shifting from co-production to production: insights on participation.
