Subject: Opportunities to learn, influence change and challenge stigma

The latest news, updates and participation options for care leavers and the workforce.

Dear Friend

Welcome to the April edition of the Staf newsletter. I hope you’ve managed to find some time to recuperate over the Easter break and feel refreshed for the season ahead.

As we all know, there has been some significant changes on the political front of late with a new First Minister, who has brought in a new team. These appointments will bring new opportunities to engage and influence and we hope to meet up with Natalie Don, the Minister for Children, Young People and Keeping The Promise. We also look forward to working with Nicola Killean who is set to become the new Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland and would like to thank Bruce Adamson for his 6 years in tenure and for his warmth and drive to ensure rights are realised and upheld. If you have any issues you would like us to raise with Nicola or Natalie on your behalf, please drop us a line at info@staf.scot.

We were delighted to see Jasmin Pilling, a Who Cares? Scotland and Care Leaver Guaranteed Income Advisory Group member speak so passionately at the Scottish Parliament’s Citizen Participation and Public Petitions committee last week on her petition to extend after care to those who left care before the age of 16, remove age barriers from continuing care and ensure care experienced young people have the same rights and equality with their non care experienced peers. You can find out more about her petition here.

Our workforce focus groups continue to be a source of knowledge, peer support and sharing best practice and free to employees of Staf member organisations and we would encourage anyone who has yet to attend them to book online.

This week we held our first in person focus group, Supported Lodgings, Supported Carers, in person in the Staf participation space. It was great to have everyone there and to use the forum to share paperwork and make plans for the future. You can sign up to our forums – Implications of Continuing Care, Care Leavers into Employment, Education and Training, Participation Practitioners Forum and our bespoke forum for Local Authority Managers at www.staf.scot/events.

I'd also like to remind you that we are hosting Each and Every Child's introduction to framing webinars which are a must for anyone who works with care experienced people. So if you've not yet had the joy of learning from Claire and Michael about the power of language and communication, I highly recommend you and your team sign up.

Our team have been busy completing the National Trauma Training course on Trauma Informed Practice which has supplemented the internal trauma informed assessment which we carried out over the last year. If you or your team have yet to complete this course, or the more advanced options, I would strongly urge you to do so. You can find out more about the course here.

With the sun shining (mostly) it’s time to plant those sunflower seeds that many of you will have received at our Staf Conference in November. You can follow the progress of our Sunflower seeds (and much more) on our Staf Instagram page

Here you will also find a video about Youth Just Us’ forthcoming Digital Dough workshops which are open to young people aged 16 – 25 with experience of the care and justice systems. Working with the brilliant Liminal studios, fuelled by pizza and using the latest virtual reality technology, young people can, in a trauma informed setting, tell the stories they want to share and address issues around stigma and discrimination which are perpetuated by negative portrayals in mainstream media. The outputs will be showcased at CYCJ’s National Youth Justice Conference in June. If you know of a young person who might be interested please email Youth Justice Participation Lead Ruth Kerracher, ruth@staf.scot.

Finally, as I mentioned in the last newsletter Annie Wildman has taken over the work of Alex Comrie and I’m delighted to share is now a fully-fledged full time member of the team. I’m also pleased to share we have appointed three associates to take on temporary roles within the team: welcome to Hannah, Shaun and Cheryle. I’ll be sharing more of their work in due course. We will also soon be advertising for some additional roles within the Staf team so keep an eye our vacancy page and our social channels for more information.

Best wishes,

Jo Derrick

National Leadership Network Year 1 report

We have just produced an easy-to-read report for the first official year of the Network.

Steering Group

The Steering Group are continuing to develop a process for how this year’s funding should be allocated. Deciding on how all Steering Group decisions are made and communicated is the main priority for the group just now. They have decided on how a small pot of money earmarked for individual grants will be spent and will start to work on how this is monitored, evaluated, and reported on. At the most recent meeting the group gave feedback on the trauma training they recently did with RLP and were considering an opportunity to support work with CYCJ.

National Leadership Network Consultants

One of the NLN Consultants is working with a member of the Steering Group on developing volunteering within the National Leadership Network.

Another Consultant is working on how best to promote the learning resource that the NLN has made in partnership with CELCIS.

They are working on supporting the next roadshow session which will hopefully take place with National House Project (Fife).

They have just ordered 50 x NLN hoodies. These will be for Steering Group members, consultants, hosts, and staff. But please look out for the chance to win a hoodie via our social media platforms soon!

Finally, they are working on a presentation to tell the story of what the Consultants achieved when they were known as the NLN Interim Oversight Board which will go alongside a podcast .

Engagement with partners and allies

NLN staff attended a Mindset in Social Care session in Stirling this month which was hosted by Winning Scotland. This was a great day to hear about projects with a focus on growth mindset developing in residential and secure care settings.

It was fantastic to catch up with Thomas Carlton from The Promise this month. This was a great opportunity to give updates on both projects and it was great to hear Thomas talk enthusiastically about the way the NLN is developing. It was heartening to hear Thomas say that he felt the NLN was not only doing its bit to Keep The Promise, but it was actually building on The Promise.

This month staff from the NLN took part in research regarding the development of a learning channel which is another strand of the Life Changes Trust legacy.

To mark Foster Care Fortnight the NLN and The Fostering Network (Scotland) are putting on a fun quiz with prizes to be won. For more information and to register to join the quiz, click here.

Comms

This month the NLN comms team met to develop a plan for year two of the project. There were also fruitful discussions on the Year 1 report, external feedback, and key messaging within the project.

Training and Development

Working with the Staf staff team Gary and Lisa have recently taken part in NES Trauma Training. This along with previous training with Resilience Learning Partnership has been a great foundation in the National Leadership Network developing trauma informed principles in practice.

Gary and Lisa also attended Each and Every Child reframing training this month hosted by Staf.

Life Changes Trust legacy leads

This month the lead staff from the LCT legacy projects met and gave updates on all the projects. There were also discussions on year 1 reporting for all the projects and the possibility of one of the NLN Consultants supporting LCT legacy work.

External feedback

A report has been produced on external feedback received on the first official year of the National Leadership Network. 15 individuals from various projects and organisations took the time to reply to four questions via a questionnaire. The NLN Consultants are currently reviewing all the information compiled.
