2 in a Million

Ruairi's work with the young people in East Ayrshire through Connecting Voices has allowed their stories to be heard in new and creative ways. Click the button below to read Ruairi's blog about the '2 in a Million' comic strip created by Kieran Cowan and illustrator Tessa MacKenzie.

"Relationships should be at the heart of the care system because that's what every young person needs when in care."

Root and Branch Review of the Care System

Fiona Duncan (Chair of the Independent Care Review) was a guest speaker at our Dinner with Dialogue "Uncomfortable Truths" in November 2017, speaking about how the voice of care-experienced young people had been the catalyst for the Independent Care Review.  The review is currently concluding its Discovery Stage and will soon be sharing the learning from this. Click on the button below to find out more.
At our AGM in November 2017, we created new Board posts specifically for care-experienced young people. Simone Smith and Jade Kilkenny have now joined our Board, and this year they will be reaching out to your young people to become part of an advisory group which will support Staf with specific projects.

We also interviewed Simone and Jade to get some insights into their influences and motivations...
Simone

Who is your hero?
Katie Matthews, my social worker.

She's made me who I am today by the support she has given me to make me go down the right path. She is like a mum to me.
Jade

Why join the Staf Board?
It's a way of being able to help people and give input to projects and other ways of helping others. It will give me a chance to communicate to professionals what it's like living with trauma, and hopefully can add to understanding and awareness.

Uncomfortable Truths...by Norma Corlette, CEO

Young people from the care system who offend are some of the hardest to reach and marginalised in society. In 2017, one of Staf's key objectives was to find out more and see what role we could play in supporting them better.

Improving Practice for Girls...by Carole Dearie, Staf Board Member

Carole has a particular interest in how we can improve outcomes for girls and young women who are currently in secure care, and will be posing some questions at our next Managers' Forum.

In the meantime, to whet your appetite,  you can find out more about Carole and the work she has been involved in on our website.
We all know how powerful the voice of care-experienced young people can be. The Year of Young People 2018 creates a platform for our young people to shine, demonstrating their talents and creativity. Find out more about what is happening here.

We have already started our celebration by sending every policy-maker in Scotland a copy of Kieran's comic "2 in a Million".

However, of special interest is TEDxYouth@Glasgow happening on 31st May. Sign up to keep informed and participate.

And if you want to encourage your care-experienced groups to get involved they can download guidance and a toolkit from the official YOYP 2018 website.

Watch out for further news on the events and activities from Staf during the year.

NEW! Corporate Parenting Focus Group

One of Staf's Board Members, Lawrie Davidson (now retired from her role as Head of Scrutiny at the Care Inspectorate), will be inviting Corporate Parents to come together to listen, reflect and act on what is happening across Scotland, and gain an understanding of what corporate parents are doing to meet their statutory duties towards care leavers. The new focus group will feed back to them on challenges, influence change and share key data.
Implications of Continuing Care Focus Group

This well-established focus group continues it's work of bringing the sector together to share practice and improve services delivering Continuing Care Arrangements.

Next meeting: 21st February 2018, 12 pm to 3 pm
Care Leavers into Employment Focus Group

We're all painfully aware that care-experienced young people are over-represented in unemployment statistics. This newly created focus group met for the first time in September 2017 with a wider range of attendees keen to address the issue.

Next meeting: 6th March 2018, 11.30 am to 2.30 pm
Supported Lodgings and Supported Carers Focus Group

Facilitated by Honorary Member, Mike Rodden, this was the first group to start collecting quantitative data to create a national picture of placement provision across Scotland. The members of the group are keen that Staf provides support in 'flagging up' to the Scottish Government the issue of difficulties in recruiting people to provide this invaluable option for care-experienced young people.

Next meeting: 14th March 2018, 11 am to 2 pm
Managers' Forum: From Trauma to Hope

At this Managers' Forum, Carole Dearie will be sharing her 'life's work', Steve Sweeney will be sharing his passion, and Rhona McLaughlin and Anne McKechnie will lead a session on supporting our workforce.
