Mask Up, Lather Up, Sleeve Up: Flu Season is Here
We have a challenging fall and winter ahead of us. In addition to the flu virus that circulates every year, we have the virus that causes COVID-19 ever-present in our communities. Our healthcare systems' capacity may be overwhelmed. Yet there are simple measures we can all take to ease this burden.

Insight Into Hospice Care and Services Offered for Alzheimer's Patients
Although hospice services are often utilized by people with a cancer diagnosis, hospice services are also readily available to anyone who, if determined by a physician, is predicted to have a life expectancy of 6 months or less, if the disease were to run its normal course. This means hospice services can be a wonderful benefit for anyone.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias can often become an emotional and physically taxing effort. Hospice provides families and caregivers insight into what to expect as their loved one’s disease progresses. Hospice delivers a holistic approach to ensure a loved one’s final days are comfortable.

Successful COVID-Style Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
Thursday, October 1st was a gorgeous, though slightly chilly, evening for the 2020 Socially Distancing, Come & Go, Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. Yet, as anyone who has gone through a breast cancer journey knows, some days are sunnier than others, yet each day support is important.

Just a reminder to all - remember your routine self-breast exams, see your physician annually, and also schedule your routine mammogram - we promise to "squeeze" you in!

Friends Don't Let Friends Skip Mammograms
October is here, but breast cancer awareness remains year-round. Spencer Hospital's "Friends Don't Let Friends Skip Mammograms" campaign is designed to remind friends and family members how important their influence is on encouraging women to take care of their health needs.

Why others choose Spencer Hospital for mammography:
"The Women's Center is beautiful and relaxing, and the staff were professional, informative and warm."

"It was the most comfortable mammogram that I have ever had. Awesome experience all the way around!"

"The techs did an excellent job as I was so afraid of the procedure and, of course, the results. They made me feel cared for and they treated me like a friend and family with compassion and care. I would recommend them wholeheartedly!"

Nutritional Benefits of the Sweet Potato
Although sold year-round, sweet potatoes are a fall staple! Often mislabeled “yams” at the grocery store, there is a difference. Yams are starchier and drier than sweet potatoes with a thick and fibrous skin. Chances are if you live in the United States, true yams are rare to find.

Aside from being a tasty side dish, did you know that sweet potatoes have many nutritional benefits as well? Sweet potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse; loaded with iron, calcium, selenium, vitamin C, and majority of B vitamins.

Spencer Hospital's Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Jenna Walsh, goes into detail of the nutritional benefits for sweet potatoes in addition to providing an easy recipe for preparing this starchy vegetable in her latest blog.
Stay Safe During Harvest This Season
As local farmers are in full swing for fall harvest, a friendly reminder that we can all do our part by helping our area farmers - and you - be safe this season.

Among the safety topics that are stressed include the most deadly subject, tractor safety, and rural roadway safety. Half the farm fatalities reported each year are from transportation incidents. Remember to slow down and make room for combines, grain wagons, and other farm equipment as they travel our roadways. Please take extra precaution while passing farm vehicles because sometimes they cannot always see you. Lastly, allow for extra time and patience on the roads, that extra minute or two can help save lives, possibly including your own.

A few safety tips for our local farmers to keep in mind while they are working in the field this year:
  • In the field, be visible with bright colored and reflective clothing.
  • On the road, make sure equipment has sufficient lighting, reflectors, and slow-moving vehicle signs.
  • In each vehicle, have at least two fire extinguishers, one outside and one inside.
