Clay County Public Health Officials Respond to COVID-19
As community spread of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19 has occurred in Iowa, Clay County Public Health officials emphasize the importance of social distancing and offer a number of recommendations to the community.

“COVID-19 is a new virus, so while symptoms may be similar to other illnesses, it is a new disease and no one has immunity to it. Therefore, social distancing – which means only essential trips to public areas – is essential in curtailing the spread of the disease,” explained Dr. David Keith, Clay County Public Health Medical Director. “Our focus is on prevention and slowing the rapid spread of this virus in order to have adequate resources, both supplies and healthcare personnel, to provide care to those in need. That will be more difficult if everyone gets sick at once.”

Visitor Restrictions at Spencer Hospital Effective March 12, 2020; Updated March 16, 2020
To protect our patients, families, healthcare workers and community during the pandemic outbreak of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus-19) and to prevent further spread of the disease, the following visitor restrictions are being implemented effective immediately.

Only a primary caregiver is allowed to visit or accompany a patient. Primary caregivers must be free from illness such as fever, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, vomiting or running nose. Only one caregiver is permitted to visit or accompany a patient. The caregiver must remain consistent throughout the patient's hospital stay and cannot rotate with another person during the patient's hospital stay.

Primary caregivers include, but are not limited to:
  • Parents/stepparents
  • Spouse/significant other
  • Patient’s regular caregiver
Instructions for visiting caregivers or visitors allowed under exceptions:
  • All caregivers are required to thoroughly wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand foam/gel upon entering and exiting patient’s room.
  • Children under the age of 18 are not permitted to visit or accompany a patient. This includes siblings at the Birth Center
  • Please remain in the patient’s room while visiting
  • Limit movement within the facility.
  • Exceptions may be made in certain situations when a patient’s condition may warrant increased family access and can be discussed with patient care teams. Contact the resource nurse or patient care manager.
Visitor restrictions are temporary and subject to change as necessary.

We understand these visitor restrictions may be difficult for you. Remember that patients enjoy cards, including online cards which can be found at www.spencerhospital.org/sendacard, and, when able, phone calls from friends and loved ones.

Spencer Hospital is committed to providing a family-center care environment, however, due to current national public health circumstances, restricting visitors is in the best interest of our patients and to ensure we maintain a healthy workforce to care for our patients. Thank you for your cooperation.
