"Racines is a collaboration lead by Étienne de Montille and Brian Sieve of Burgundy and Rodolphe Péters of [Pierre Péters in] Champagne. Étienne and Brian had been on an exploratory trip to California and Oregon in search of a place where they could put down roots for an initial project beyond that of Domaine de Montille in Burgundy. In the Sta. Rita Hills, they found the precision and finesse they were looking for.

A year later Rodolph Péters, with a similar intent, joined forces to assist in the creation of sparkling wines, also from the Sta. Rita Hills. The team came together to join their individual experiences in hand-crafting wines of purity and transparency to create a range of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and sparkling wines from the cool climate of the Sta. Rita Hills. Racines represents the coming together of all that is wondrous about Burgundy, Champagne, and California. But for Étienne and Rodolphe, Racines offers the opportunity to create something completely new, liberated from the weight of history that comes with making wine in their own villages in Burgundy and Champagne. The Racines collection brings with it all the multi-generational perspective of their combined experience, crafted in the ocean-driven cool climate of the Sta. Rita Hills, a terroir that has quickly come to be considered among the best in the world for making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay ....

The Pinot Noirs employing whole-cluster fermentation, adding elegance, lift and spiciness, combined with pigéage throughout fermentation, offering a more robust fruit profile that brings volume and exceptional aging potential. The Chardonnays are grown only a few miles from the ocean in ancient marine deposits, giving these wines a sense of energy, transparency, and precision, and the advantage of being crafted with the techniques and expertise of hundreds of years of Burgundian and Champenois winemaking."

"The wines are deep, layered and, not surprisingly, super-expressive with regard to site. The Pinots in particular tend to show notable breadth from a combination of a high percentage of stems, classic winemaking, and relatively long aging ..."

Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills Grand Reserve (LGR19-2) NV
100% Chardonnay planted in Sorento loam, Gazas clay loam, and Tierra sandy loam in the Wenzlau Family, Sanford & Benedict, La Rinconada, and Bentrock Vineyards; manual harvest, no fining or filtration, 30 months on the lees, and 4.5 g/L dosage (i.e. Extra Brut); 2019 base with 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests; disgorged May 2022; by Rodolphe Péters of Pierre Péters
‣ "This is the best American sparkling wine I've ever tasted. The 2019 vintage base also includes 25% reserve wines from the 2017 and 2018 harvests. This Grand Reserve Chardonnay made from the cool Sta. Rita Hills is crafted with a Champagne pedigree, and it shows. This Blanc de Blancs from across renowned Sta Rita Hills vineyards has undeniable Old World charm and sophistication. The aromatics boast ample toasted biscuit notes and great yeasty complexity from the 30 months on lees. The palate has a fantastic depth of fruit, spiced pear, cardamom, nutmeg and bruised apples. There is a subtlety of savoury biscuits and hints of almond cream. Elegant, yet bold and wildly delicious."

Chardonnay Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée 2020
100% Chardonnay planted in Sorento loam in the Wenzlau Family and Rancho La Viña Vineyards; fermented in a combination of 500L puncheons and 228L barriques, 10% new; total 11-month élevage with 5 months in stainless steel
"A wonderfully complex wine with ample texture. The Sta Rita Hills Cuvée is sourced from some of Santa Barbara's top Chardonnay sites. The wine sees very little new oak and, as a result, shines forth with delicate brilliance—classically cool climate Chardonnay aromatics of soft white florals, crushed chalk and a touch of mint. The palate has verve and energy with savoury petrichor-driven minerality coming to the fore, followed on by bruised apples, a touch of cardamom and honey to finish adding depth and complexity along the way."
Clive Pursehouse, Decanter Magazine

Racines
Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills Cuvée 2020
100% Pinot Noir planted in Gazos clay loam over shale in the La Encantada, La Rinconada, Rancho La Viña, and Sanford & Benedict Vineyards; 50% whole cluster; total 17-month élevage in 228L barriques, 15% new
‣ "Aromas of strawberry fruit leather give way to notes of turned earth and crushed black basalt. The palate is savoury, with underlying dried fruit flavours. Montmorency cherries, garden soil and clove, evolve into notes of savoury herbs and streaks of graphite minerality."
Clive Pursehouse, Decanter Magazine

Racines
Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard 2019
100% Chardonnay planted in Santa Lucia shaly clay loam and Tierra sandy loam; a cuvée of two rocky, windy, north-facing parcels; fermented in a combination of 500L puncheons, 350L barrels, and 228L barriques, 25% new; total 11-month élevage with 7 months in stainless steel
‣ "A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Chardonnay Bentrock Vineyard dazzles with its purity and translucence. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, white flowers, and mint give the 2019 its brilliant, sculpted personality. Soaring aromatics and bright saline accents build into the regal finish."
