The 2006 Château Haut-Bergey, a blend of approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot, is entering a beautiful stage of maturity. The tannins have softened, the fruit remains vibrant, and the wine now delivers that magical combination of complexity, harmony, and freshness that only comes with time in bottle.

The aromatics are classic mature Pessac-Léognan: cassis, graphite, charcoal, tobacco leaf, incense, crushed stone, and that distinctive smoky mineral edge that makes great Graves wines so compelling.

Robert Parker recognized the wine's potential early, calling Haut-Bergey:

"Consistently one of the top, under-the-radar wines of Pessac-Léognan."

He awarded the wine 91 points (an exceptionally great score at the time) and wrote:

"Haut-Bergey's beautiful 2006 boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a classic bouquet of hot rocks intermixed with graphite, cassis, incense, and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied with noticeable but sweet tannin, impressive purity, and an alluring texture."

David Ramey produced his first Chardonnay from Larry Hyde’s vineyard way back in 1996, just behind Marcassin and the same year that folks like Patz & Hall and Kistler gained access to the fruit. Even 30 years ago the greats knew great when they saw it.

Hyde Vineyard is on the Napa side of the Carneros District. Summer temperatures are kept relatively cool by marine air flowing through the Petaluma Gap. Ancient creek beds provide drainage and add a scattering of rocks. The soils are heavy Haire Clay Loam about 30 inches deep with impenetrable clay subsoil which limits vine vigor and crop yield.

Nowadays Dave’s parcels consist of 73% Old Wente field selection (planted 1997 and 1999) and 27% a selection of Calera that Larry Hyde chose himself (planted 2014).

The 2023 growing season was defined by a wet and cold winter, recharging ground water and significantly delaying bloom. Spring remained cool, leading to a mild summer without any extended heat waves. Harvest began after Labor Day with the Hyde Vineyard being picked on September 25 and October 5.

It’s a vintage that will be remembered for this long, cool season and the extreme high qualities of the Chardonnay. In this case, the Ramey Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard 2023 was whole cluster-pressed for phenolic delicacy. Then fermented with native yeast and full native malolactic fermentation take place in barrel, with sur lies bâtonnage. It was then aged 20 months in 20% new French oak barrels, then traditionally fined for clarity and texture and bottled without filtration in June 2025.

Once again we are talking about one of the greatest Chardonnays produced in California…floral, vertical, full-bodied, perfectly oaked…nobody does it better…
