Dear Friend, Okay, okay. We went back. Again. First we let you in on Bill Harlan’s members-only The Napa Valley Reserve. Then we came back with the 2013 and 2014. And today, because apparently we can’t help ourselves, we found one more cache, and it reaches even deeper into the cellar: the 2011 and the 2012, in bottles and magnums. Same rules as always. You won’t find these on our website. No search results, no retail listing, no shelf. The only way in is the link in this email. New here? The Napa Valley Reserve is Bill Harlan’s invitation-only club. Membership comes with a six-figure initiation fee, and members craft their own barrels alongside the team behind Harlan Estate, from fruit grown right next to Meadowood in St. Helena. |

We opened a 2011 here to taste it. It’s singing. The Napa Valley Reserve 2011 · Tasted at Spectrum |

The 2011: the vintage that proved everyone wrong. It was one of the coolest, latest growing seasons Napa has ever seen, with rain right at harvest, and plenty of people wrote it off at release. The best sites told a different story. Cool years make wines of real elegance and freshness, the kind that age gracefully, and 2011 has quietly become a collector’s “told you so” vintage. We pulled a cork here at Spectrum to check in, and it’s singing: open, layered and drinking beautifully right now. Fifteen years of patience, and it shows. The 2012: the generous one. After two cool years, Napa got a near-perfect season: warm, even and abundant, with a long, relaxed harvest. The result is ripe, plush, crowd-pleasing Cabernet with depth to spare. Pour the 2012 for a crowd; save the 2011 for the people who’ll notice. |

Price? Usually there is no price. These wines simply aren’t for sale. But for you? Still $199.98 a bottle, $399.98 a magnum, the same as the younger vintages, with fifteen years of cellaring thrown in for free. I mean, come on, who else even gets the chance to see this stuff, let alone own it? One more thing: this link is still just for you. Please keep it to yourself. When this cache is gone, it’s gone. Will there be a round four? We’re not promising anything. (But you know us by now.) |
