| | | The Lenoble Champagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Extra Brut 2012 is produced from 100% Chardonnay from the Grand Cru village of Chouilly. The base wine was aged in both tanks and 228-litre barrels before the cuvee aged for over 10 years on lees in their historic cellars prior to disgorgement. In fact, this wine is probably more like 12-13 years aging as this disgorgement is ‘fresh’ though there is no disgorgement date on the bottle. The nose first reveals a lovely toasty undertone, before delicate hints of honey and candied fruit, notably apricot, round out its aromatic complexity. Gradually, subtle accents of fresh hazelnuts emerge, adding extra depth and elegance to the whole. On the palate, this wine is just now starting to emerge from it slumber, showing the richer profile of Chardonnay form this northerly village in the Cote des Blancs while still retaining intense minerality, focus, precision and structure. The dosage in this vintage is properly metered at 3 g/l and the wine is in pinpoint balance. It’s just, like, wow!

| | | | | | The Artadi Viñas de Gaín (Rioja) Blanco 2020 is one of the greatest white wines from Roja we’ve tasted in the past year, which is saying a TON. Even among the red ‘tall trees’ at a recent tasting of the range from this esteemed house, the one wine that stood out and rocked our world was this crazy-good white. Produced from 100% old Viura vines in their beloved Laguardia, this wine has the texture of a fine Burgundy but with an energy that is all Spanish. This is crazy cool stuff, with a texture that one would think was derived from oak but in fact there was no new oak and the wine aged in steel for two years on its fine lees. Incredible.
From Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez, “94 Points! The only white produced here is the 2020 Viñas de Gaín Blanco, which is balsamic and aromatic, floral and herbaceous, from a fresher and more elegant vintage. It fermented with some skins to give it complexity and volume, but he has reduced the time the wine is in contact with the skins, and this year, the wine finished part of the fermentation in used 600-liter demi-muids and was kept in stainless steel with lees for two years. They have stopped racking the white, and they feel it keeps a livelier character. It has the profile of the traditional Rioja whites with a modern twist, cleaner, more focused and precise. It has a moderate 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.31 and 6.05 grams of sugar, fresh and vibrant. It's beautiful, possibly the best year for the white and a year they think was better for the white than for the reds. Bravo!" |
