Livio Sassetti Brunello di Montalcino Pertimali 2018

When the wines from Livio Sassetti’s Pertimali estate are ‘on’, they are indeed the finest wines in Montalcino. Even in more difficult vintages, the wines perform remarkably. As always, it starts with the ‘dirt. Livio’s ‘dirt’ focuses on the famed ‘cru’ vineyard of Montosoli. So, start with one of Montalcino’s greatest sites and add meticulous farming and winemaking, and it is easy to explain their consistent success.
Succinctly, this is an unexpectedly delicious Brunello and the best ‘number’ is the last one. We’re selling this $90-$100 bottle of Brunello for $48.98! You save enough to put together a pretty fine meal to go along with it. Saluté!

Score: 96JS
Price: $48.98 (124 available)

“Intense aromas of black cherries, lavender and spice, such as nutmeg. Some sandalwood and bark, too. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and tannins for the vintage. Rather chewy, suggesting that additional bottle age is needed. Try after 2026.” - 96, JamesSuckling.com
Mastroberardino Taurasi ‘Radici’ 2018

Taurasi, which is, as we wrote about previously, something akin to the Barolo of Italy’s south, producing firm, powerful, cellar-worthy wines from the Aglianico grape that blossom after two decades. The winery continues to go from strength to strength, producing wines define the term ‘classic’ when it comes to the Taurasi wine style. These are big, potent, sturdy, complex, ageable wines that really encapsulate what Taurasi is all about. Their Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici 2018 is one of their juiciest, most accessible efforts. Though capable of aging for another two decades the wine does present a certain amount of drinkability now, but perhaps a decanter and a plate of pasta will add to the experience, y’know what I mean?
it.

Mastroberardino Taurasi Radici 2018, 0.75
Score: 96JS
Price: $39.98 (85 available)

“Aromas of dark cherries and cedar with a touch of elderberries and a pleasant floral component. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with chalky tannins complemented by elegant concentration that leads to a persistent and elegant finish.” - 96, JamesSuckling.com
