Returning to In-Person Meetings

Increasing vaccination rates and the reopening of many facilities give us hope that many, if not most, SMART Recovery in-person meetings can resume/restart over the coming months.

But before you forge ahead to resume in person and possibly abandon your local online meeting, please think through the following advice from local meeting facilitators who have already restarted their in-person meetings.

  1. Involve your group in the decision. If it’s decided to try in-person and your previous facility is not yet available, ask the group to help explore potential locations. They may come up with locations you hadn’t thought of (for example, a firehouse meeting room).

  2. Realize that all members of a group may not be comfortable returning to in-person. Make sure there’s an alternative plan for them, e.g., continue a weekly Zoom meeting at a time that works for you and them. Refer participants to another nearby local online meeting that’s going to continue. Or perhaps have a co-facilitator in your group that would like to continue to offer your online meeting.

  3. Consider an opt-in group communications tool (closed Facebook group, private Google Group) to keep people informed. Be clear that this list is used only for SMART group information, nothing else. Over-communicate what’s happening.

  4. Warmer weather will allow many groups to meet outside, but be sure you’ve got a rain option and a way to post any changes to the group.

  5. Follow local and facility safety guidelines and your own common sense in setting up your meeting. Maintain social distance and wear masks even if most everyone has been vaccinated. As long as community spread is occurring in your community, err on the safe side.

  6. Don’t be discouraged if you have lower attendance after returning in-person. This will improve, but may be an indication that your whole group wasn’t entirely on board.

Meetings of Interest for Volunteers

SMART 4 Volunteers (S4V)

SMART FOR VOLUNTEERS (S4V) is a private SMART Recovery meeting for our volunteers.  While volunteering, people need to take time to focus on themselves. We want to offer a place where you have the opportunity to focus on your own wellbeing and recovery, with the security of being supported by your peers. This meeting has a different purpose than the SMART Meeting Management (SMM) meetings.

This group meets on Wednesdays from 5:00 -- 6:00 p.m. ET. and is facilitated by Jasper2016.

Please check SMARTCAL or VolunteerHQ for the Zoom information.

This is a meeting for Volunteers Only. Do not share this meeting number with regular meeting participants, please.

"The S4V meetings provide a safe place for volunteers to talk about their personal or recovery issues with their peers in a small group. We usually have between five and nine participants. It often doesn't feel appropriate to let my guard down and share during meetings because I have my volunteer hat on. In the S4V meetings, I can say what I want to say in this confidential venue and I don't have to pretend like I'm feeling 'strong' if I'm not feeling strong that day. The strength that I find in this colleague group is important to my continued recovery success." -DonnaSpedMusic

SMART Meeting Management (SMM) Meetings

If you are interested in furthering your meeting management skills or more smoothly handling challenges you might encounter, this discussion meeting is for you. Learn how to balance setting boundaries with creating an accepting environment in which participants have meaningful discussions. You will hear how others deal with this ongoing balancing act and what they have found helpful through experience. You will learn how to be assertive on behalf of the group (that is, how to be “authoritative”) and how to deal with common challenges such as AA bashing, moderation advocacy, etc. Discussions may also include tool presentation and application, or new tools as they are developed.

The SMART Meeting Management (SMM) meetings are every:

  • Monday: 10:00 p.m. ET

  • Wednesday: 8:00 p.m. ET

  • Friday: 6:00 p.m. ET

The Teen and Young Adult Facilitators SMM meeting is every 3rd Thursday of the month at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Links to all SMM meetings can be found here.
