Subject: Support This Meeting 2025

It's time to contribute to the meetings you enjoy!

Dear SMART Recovery Stakeholders,

Happy Recovery Month! As stated in the new versions of our handbooks, recovery is a deeply personal process to improve one’s wellbeing. We’ve worked hard to adopt the most empowering language possible to support individuals working to reduce or resolve addictive behaviors of concern.  Some in our community may not even choose to use the word recovery to describe their journey. That said, it’s a word that means a lot to many, and it’s a word that connects us to a broader movement that we plan to continue to lead into a more empowering future. Here’s one example of a recent recovery event in Minnesota with a robust SMART presence.

Each year around this time, we launch a “Support this Meeting” fundraising campaign. Not everyone who attends our meetings will be able to provide financial support in honor of them, but we do hope that those who can will choose to do so. To make a contribution in support of your meeting(s), simply visit the meeting’s listing(s) on SMARTfinder, click the red “Support this Meeting” button, and complete the donation form. It’s that easy! And every amount helps!

Every meeting that collects at least $25 in “Support this Meeting” donations between now and October 31 will earn the chance to receive a free 2026 SMART conference registration, self-paced online training code, or SMART Shop gift certificate. Facilitators, please help spread the word about this opportunity to support SMART! If every meeting raised just $25, we’d raise over $40,000 together!

You’ve probably also seen the recent messages about our re-branded Empowerment Champions monthly sustainer program. I’ve always loved highlighting how our volunteers and partners are SMART Empowerment Champions. Now monthly financial sustainers will also be recognized with this designation. We currently have 152 monthly sustainers, an increase of over 50% from this time last year. I’d like to add at least 50 more during this year’s Support Your Meeting campaign. Just choose to make your donation monthly rather than one-time to help us meet that goal!

The SMART National Office Team and Board work hard to secure other funding to support our mission. We were recently awarded $60,000 by the Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council to support outreach and training in two regions in that state. And we’ve been adding partners to our Multiple Pathways Partner program to integrate SMART into the services already being provided in local communities. Here’s a picture from a recent training with one of our partner organizations in Olympia, Washington.

Finally, We continue to do grant-supported work statewide in Ohio and in two counties in North Carolina while seeking funds from additional states. While all of these other sources of funds will help to create a sustainable fulture for SMART, grassroots donations continue to provide over 12% of our operating budget each year.

SMART is poised to scale to 10,000 meetings within the next 10 years. Please help us get there with a donation today. Thank you!

Peace in Empowerment,

Pete Rubinas

Executive Director and Proud Empowerment Champion
