Recovery Month, training sale, and a podcast on problem gambling

Recovery Month, Training Sale, & Problem Gambling Spotlight!

Recovery Month, started in 1989, is held every September to build awareness of evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. It's also a great opportunity to promote our nation’s strong and proud recovery community and affirm the dedication of service providers and communities who make multiple pathways to recovery possible.

For some great background information and additional resources, visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website: SAMHSA--Recovery Month

Speaking of Recovery Month, we'd love to share your pictures of how you might be living your recovery this month! Send us pictures from recovery events and we'll consider posting them on our social media channels.

What better way to demonstrate our pursuit of a healthy and balanced lifestyle than sharing what we’re up to during the month of September!

We’re also happy to consider sharing your reflections and stories about recovery for others to enjoy. Feel free to reach out to Luke Frazier in our communications department (LFrazier@smartrecovery.org) with your ideas.

If you agree that SMART needs to be more than the “best kept secret” in recovery, send us pictures and stories to share!

Many Directions Lead To Recovery

Maureen Greeley's journey to the head of the nationally recognized Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling (ECPG) included stops at the San Diego Zoo, a sanctuary for wolves, and communications work for the Washington State Lottery. This broad range of experience has informed her approach and deepened her ability to relate to a variety of individuals and communities.

Under her leadership, in 2009 ECPG launched the annual Four Directions Conference that brings together representatives of Tribal Nations in the Pacific Northwest and many other communities each fall to focus on holistic health, wellness, and recovery support.

In this podcast Maureen talks about her personal and professional journey, how problem gambling is growing, what building supportive communities can do to address all facets of recovery.

Getting in the Recovery Zone

[Guest blog by SMART Facilitator Rick Kuplinski]

Can we find the “zone” in our recovery from addictive behaviors? Is it possible to get so good at practicing the Four Points of SMART Recovery* that it becomes almost automatic?

SMART Recovery USA’s National Conference will be held April 3-4, 2025 at the Hilton Charlotte Airport Hotel in Charlotte, NC. Registration information will be released in September. There will be breakout sessions for volunteers and professionals, and we are seeking 60-minute presentation proposals for both.

This year's theme is Building Communities of Empowerment. Building on last year's conference, we intend to highlight how SMART can be at the forefront of building communities of empowerment at the local level. We have an unprecedented opportunity to make the promise of multiple pathways a reality today in more and more diverse communities.

All submissions will be considered. However, we will prioritize presentations that relate to:

  • Successful partnerships that have helped bring SMART to broader communities

  • Strategies and techniques that strengthen SMART Recovery USA's values: Empowerment | Equity | Inclusion | Integrity | Accountability

  • Adopting a harm reduction mindset to better include participants regardless of their chosen goal

  • Growing and strengthening SMART’s Family & Friends program

Proposals are due on October 15, 2024. Notification of decisions will occur by December 14, 2024. Click below to learn more and submit!
