The Power of Tools and More

Thanks, Tools, and Conference 2025!

SMART Recovery would like to send a big thank you to Andy Orr as he enters retirement from his SMART Recovery volunteer role at the end of this month. Andy helped bring SMART Recovery to North Carolina, where he built a private therapy practice around the same behavioral concepts included in SMART.

In addition to being a meeting facilitator for many years, he served as a local volunteer advisor and as a member of SMART's Board of Directors. You may recognize him from some of our training videos. Thanks, Andy, for your commitment to self-empowered recovery. Enjoy your retirement!

Tools For Change

Christopher Toomey is a SMART Facilitator in Gulfport Mississippi. After years spent in active addiction, he realized he needed to make changes. As a Navy Veteran, he decided to go to inpatient treatment at the VA, which is where he learned about some SMART tools.

In this podcast Christopher talks about his journey to becoming a trained facilitator, the support he received from other participants, and the value he finds in SMART.

SMART Recovery USA’s National Conference will be held April 3-4, 2025 at the Hilton Charlotte Airport Hotel in Charlotte, NC. Registration information will be released in September. There will be breakout sessions for volunteers and professionals, and we are seeking 60-minute presentation proposals for both.

This year's theme is Building Communities of Empowerment. Building on last year's conference, we intend to highlight how SMART can be at the forefront of building communities of empowerment at the local level. We have an unprecedented opportunity to make the promise of multiple pathways a reality today in more and more diverse communities.

All submissions will be considered. However, we will prioritize presentations that relate to:

  • Successful partnerships that have helped bring SMART to broader communities

  • Strategies and techniques that strengthen SMART Recovery USA's values: Empowerment | Equity | Inclusion | Integrity | Accountability

  • Adopting a harm reduction mindset to better include participants regardless of their chosen goal

  • Growing and strengthening SMART’s Family & Friends program

Proposals are due on October 15, 2024. Notification of decisions will occur by December 14, 2024. Click below to learn more and submit!

Finding Sustainable Recovery

[Guest blog by SMART Facilitator Nonie Sims]

My journey to recovery and my coming out as gay has some interesting parallels. Coming out is so like the recovery process; acclimating ourselves, and our loved ones to the new person who is emerging and evolving each day. A total mind shift. I could no longer live in the darkness of hiding my sexuality and later, in my case, hiding my substance abuse...

The Sober Bridesmaid

[Guest blog by SMART Facilitator Rick Kuplinski]

It had all the ingredients of an anxiety-producing situation for someone in early recovery: time away from home and work, a long flight, meeting up with old college friends over a long weekend of nights on the town, and a bachelorette party. And of course, the wedding itself with open bar, the toasts, people sneaking off to the restroom a suspicious number of times. And so on.

When the young woman about to be a bridesmaid spoke about this in a SMART Recovery meeting, one could hear the fear in her voice...
