Dear Friend,

Happy US Thanksgiving!

I always loved Thanksgiving and as I grapple with it's dark history and implications, I'm much less clear what to say to you in what has become my annual holiday message.

Betrayal and slaughter of indigenous peoples isn't cause for celebration. Nor is slaughter of gentle, intelligent bird relatives.

Though I'd love to have some deeply thought-out, carefully-crafted, esoteric and insightful message, the truth is that I'm still grappling inside myself. It's OK to be in process. Process is how we create mindful, instead of mindless, change. It's also how we avoid staying stuck.

Truth is, we NEED to be responsive to new realities and emerging facts in our world. As much as we may want to cling to an attitude or ritual for pleasure or for comfort, that is NOT a path forward. And forward is the only direction life moves.

Energy and form are closely correlated. Shamans know that form is simply the effect; energy is what is causative. Find a way to take the energy of gratitude, and put it toward something meaningful to you. Give something. Really give something. Something from your heart.

Again I'll suggest some potential ways to do this:

Become vegan. You'll get plenty of protein. The only think you'll give up is animal cruelty.

Beyond these causes there are so many more which need your help and support. Mother Earth desperately needs all of us to come forward as stewards, land-protectors, and water-protectors. Find a way to make a difference. Make your gratitude sing out loud in a song of joy and service.
