Background

Michoacán has long faced significant organized crime activity involving groups such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Carteles Unidos factions, La Nueva Familia Michoacana, and others. These groups engage in drug trafficking, extortion, and territorial violence. The state has been under Level 4 “Do Not Travel” status for an extended period, with U.S. government personnel already subject to strict travel restrictions.
