Supplemental Info:
BACKGROUND
Reynosa is a border city in the northern part of the Mexican state of state of Tamaulipas. Reynosa sits directly opposite McAllen, Texas.
Violence erupted overnight into Monday morning following the arrest of Alexander Benavides Flores, alias “Metro 9” or “R9,” a high-priority target and alleged leader of the Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel. In retaliation, cartel gunmen set up at least eight roadblocks (narcobloqueos) on highways linking Reynosa to neighboring municipalities. Armed groups burned vehicles, hijacked cars to form barricades, destroyed multiple government surveillance cameras, and engaged in gunfire and vandalism.
