US Embassy France warns of upcoming multi-sector general strike and ongoing protests countrywide, some violent & destructive. Curfews possible. Caution urged.

Supplemental Info:

SITREP

France faces a major national day of interprofessional strikes and demonstrations on Thursday. It is the first large-scale action involving both public- and private-sector workers since the start of the school year, building on weeks of student-led (lycée and university) mobilizations over school conditions that broadened into cost-of-living and migrant protests. Previous weekend actions (notably October 17, 24, and 31) drew hundreds of thousands and included some violence, looting, and property damage.

The day is classified “a risque” by territorial intelligence. A note dated November 3 anticipates a possible “new threshold” of violence, particularly in city centers.

French student and cost-of-living protests have already crossed borders. They reached Belgium’s French-speaking areas (especially Liège, with arrests, clashes, and shop damage), and inspired Gen Z actions in Germany (tens of thousands on October 31 across dozens of cities). Similar risks have been noted for the Netherlands and elsewhere in Western Europe.

Caution is urged if traveling in the region.

Security Alert

U.S. Embassy Paris, France

November 4, 2026

Event: Protests, demonstrations, and rallies continue across France. A nationwide multi-sector strike is planned for Thursday, November 5, affecting teachers, healthcare workers, government employees, and public transport across France. The four largest railway unions have called for a joint national strike. Numerous other groups have also called for protests on November 5 and through the weekend. Recent routes for demonstrations were approved for outside of city centers, but protests can occur outside planned routes. Recent demonstrations were violent and involved property destruction and looting. Police have responded with less-than-lethal crowd control methods.

Curfews in parts of France, including some neighborhoods in Paris and the vicinity, could continue. Curfew decisions are made locally, can be implemented with short notice, and restrict gatherings and free movement to some public landmarks.

Anticipated Impacts:

  • Rail: Rail service will see disruptions on November 5, and disruptions could start as early as the evening of November 4. Check updates from rail service operators before traveling. Detailed train service disruptions are expected to be published by Wednesday evening.

  • Metro:  Demonstrations or strikes can trigger last-minute closures or result in delays.

  • Air: Air travel may be disrupted by the multi-sector strike. Check with your airline for the status of your flight.

  • Roads: Demonstrations and blockades can cause road delays.

  • Schools, Hospitals, Banks & Government Offices: Expect possible closures or reduced services in Paris and across France.

Recommendations:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations or large gatherings.

  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings.

  • Check social media and information published by the local mairie (mayor’s office) or prefecture (government office) to determine if curfews are in place in your area.

  • In Paris and surrounding areas, consult RATP (https://www.ratp.fr/ ) for the latest on Metro station closures and other interruptions.

  • Monitor SNCF for regional train disruptions to check if your journey is affected.

  • Contact your airline to see if there are any disruptions to your travel plans.
