Supplemental Info:
SITREP: French high-school unrest
Protests that began mid-September over teacher shortages, overcrowded classes, and dilapidated lycées (public secondary schools) have escalated into sustained public disturbances across France. Of roughly 3,700 high schools, 400–500 were fully or partially closed Monday. Education officials report 24 schools burned or ransacked and 78 staff injured. Interior Ministry figures show more than 5,000 arrests since late Sept, with more than 300 officers and gendarmes hurt. Property damage runs into the millions of euros.
Violence is no longer confined to student blockades. In Lens, a 15-year-old lost a hand after handling a police stun grenade during clashes involving 200–250 people throwing objects. Tear gas was deployed in Lille and Toulouse; a hooded, masked group set a fire at Paris’s Lycée Vauquelin after attempting forced entry, with the principal stating the attackers were not students. Hydrochloric acid has been thrown at officers, and projectiles, bin fires, and assaults on staff continue.
Many participants are clearly adults. Officials and school heads describe non-student agitators moving between sites, and roughly 15 percent of those arrested are adults. Far-left networks, including elements linked to France Unbowed, are assessed by the government as having hijacked the original grievances into urban disorder.
Palestinian flags and anti-Israel signs are repeatedly visible at blockades, outside any stated educational demand. In Carpentras, crowds under a Palestinian flag chanted “We burned Israel” and “Who are the Jews? We trample them,” alongside other anti-Israel slogans. A national day of action is called for Tuesday. Oct 6. Priority remains restoration of order around schools and transit routes.
