The United States is reinforcing an already elevated force presence tied to the conflict with Iran that began in late February 2026. The additions expand strike, amphibious, and maritime options while a naval blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect and Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure continue. No open-source reporting confirms a final decision to resume large-scale strikes.

Naval and amphibious reinforcements

The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group left San Diego around September 27–28 and is en route to the region. Expected by early November, the new arrivals could produce a three-carrier concentration for the first time since April 2026.

The USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group, with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (more than 2,000 Marines, F-35s, helicopters, and amphibious vehicles), also departed San Diego in the same window. The USS Boxer amphibious group is already operating near the Strait of Hormuz.

Preparations and command guidance

On October 7, Axios reported that the Pentagon had instructed U.S. Central Command to finish preparations for a possible resumption of major combat operations against Iran. The directive set no date. U.S. and Israeli sources told the outlet the window could fall before the 3 November U.S. midterms (or Israel’s October 27 election). Expected targets in such a scenario were described as Iranian energy infrastructure, and nuclear-related sites.

On October 8, The New York Times reported that the military is drawing up options on Trump’s orders, including a short, intense campaign of about three days focused on drone and missile forces, energy facilities, and other military sites.
