Multiple sources report possible Russian use of chemical munitions in an attack on Mariupol, Ukraine. DoD calls reports "deeply concerning" if true. Monitoring.

Supplemental Info:

Pentagon spokesman, John Kirby, has issued a statement on the unconfirmed reports of a chemical weapons attack in Mariupol.

"We are aware of social media reports which claim Russian forces deployed a potential chemical munition in Mariupol, Ukraine. We cannot confirm at this time and will continue to monitor the situation closely."

"These reports, if true, are deeply concerning and reflective of concerns that we have had about Russia’s potential to use a variety of riot control agents, including tear gas mixed with chemical agents, in Ukraine.”

Subscribers are reminded that in late March, Joe Biden said NATO would respond if Russia used chemical weapons in Ukraine.

"We would respond if he uses it, and the nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use."

"Whether or not -- you're asking whether NATO would cross -- we'd make that decision at the time."
