Southern Madagascar Faces Relentless Climate Destruction

The first months of 2025 have brought devastating climate crises to southern Madagascar. After the driest October–December on record, wildfires ravaged Anosy, affecting all SEED’s conservation and livelihoods projects. Just weeks later, Tropical Storm Jude hit, displacing over 10,000 people and causing widespread destruction.

Communities and Projects Hit Hard...

🟠 Homes & Livelihoods Lost

SEED team members and many in the community lost much of their homes.

🟠 Severe School Damage

Cyclone-proof SEED schools built since 2022 withstood the storm, but older structures in Mananara II, Tsagnoriha, Mahatalaky,

and beyond suffered severe damage.

🟠 Weavers’ Workshop Destroyed

The Sainte Luce Weavers’ Cooperative workshop was badly damaged, putting local artisans' livelihoods at risk.

🟠 Healthcare Setback

Recently installed solar panels at Manambaro’s healthcare centre were destroyed, leaving the facility without essential lighting.

🟠 Apiary Devastated

Fallen trees crushed several beehives at the Project Renitantely apiary in Vatambe, threatening honey production and the livelihoods of local beekeepers.

Climate disasters are now hitting here nearly every month. With looming aid cuts threatening vital health programmes, vulnerable communities are facing crisis after crisis with fewer resources to recover.
