Launching the Brighter Together campaign with Solar United Madagascar

We’re excited to announce the launch of our Brighter Together campaign from 22 to 29 April to fundraise for Solar United Madagascar (SUM). SEED is a proud member of SUM, a consortium of five organisations working collaboratively to create lasting impact. Together, we are aiming to raise £100,000 to support community-led solar energy solutions across the country.

Why this matters

Madagascar is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world, which places significant pressure on its infrastructure and development. In this context, 90% of rural communities still have little to no access to reliable electricity. This lack of energy access affects everything, from education and healthcare to livelihoods and environmental resilience.

What is Solar United Madagascar?

Solar United Madagascar (SUM) is a consortium of four charities and one social enterprise working to expand access to clean, affordable solar energy for underserved communities in Madagascar. By working together, we can combine expertise, scale our impact, and reach more people than ever before.

SEED’s role in the consortium

At SEED, we focus on community-driven development and long-term sustainability. Within SUM, and through our Project Masoandro (“sun” in Malagasy), we are supporting the implementation of “Light Libraries” and Digital Learning in schools in the Anosy region, contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

Through community-run “Light Libraries”, families can rent affordable solar lamps and batteries, improving safety, education, and livelihoods while generating income for local schools. Building on this, the Digital Learning programme uses solar-powered tablets in classrooms to equip teachers and engage over 500 students with high-quality educational resources.
