Welcome to Day 3 of the Rise Of You Challenge!
We are so excited to have you here. You are AWESOME for hanging in there... keep going!
Are you ready to roll? Cool, let’s get started.
It
is important to set goals that are realistic and achievable. There is
no point in setting up a goal that you can’t achieve because this could
take all the courage and confidence you have built up and wipe it away.
It will not only waste your time, it can also affect you emotionally as
there is no way you will be able to achieve what you set out to, which
means you can start feeling like a failure.

There are ways to help
you set achievable goals. This method is commonly known as SMART goal
setting technique. It is a basic outline that you can utilize in order
to come up with goals that are attainable and realistic. It allows you
to experience both material and emotional fulfillment when you have
attained your goals which will help you boost your self confidence.
S.M.A.R.T. Goals
S for Specific The
first aspect of goal setting is that you should be specific. Do not set
something ambiguous which can be easily misconstrued. For example, “I
want to become rich” is a very vague goal which can never be objective.
For someone, earning $5,000 a month means they are rich, while another
person may not think they are rich even they have earned a million
dollars. Instead, the goal should have been more specific like, “I will
earn a million dollars this year.” That’s just an example; you get the
point.
M for Measurable You should be able
to measure the success of your goals. In the above example, you can
easily measure the success of your goal, because you have revolved it
around a number. Other examples are “I will shed 5 pounds this month”,
“I will read 2 chapters of this book every day”, “I will add to my
wardrobe by 1 new dress each fortnight” and so on. You can use your
diary or success log for this.
A for Attainable Though
it is all right to aim for the moon, you should be practical about your
goals. You should stay within attainable limits. It is important that
your goals should not go beyond your individual capacity too much. It is
all right to challenge yourself a bit, but if you go too far, you are
only going to lose your motivation and give up.
R for Realistic If
you aim for something like being the first person to live on Mars, your
goal achievement won’t be too easy. And if you set something like you
want to meet an alien today, it is probably not going to happen. Be
realistic when you are setting goals. They should be something that can
be achieved, but are just out of your reach for the moment.
T for Time-Sensitive Give
time great importance when you are setting a goal. Everything revolves
around the time factor. If you achieve in a year what you needed in a
month, the goal is probably not going to help you much and this can
damage your self confidence.
Remember Your Goals Have To Match Your Values
To
succeed and be happy with your life, you need to match your goals to
what you value the most in your life. In order to do that, a short
reflection of what you really want and what are those that really
matters to you will help you shape your career goals.
The main
reason why your goals have to match to your values is your personal
fulfillment and contentment. Doing something you don’t want in life will
stress you out especially when things get more challenging.
This
can possibly happen because you are doing something you do not believe
in. This will only cause you the feeling of discontentment and
frustration. The worse thing that could happen is that, even if you
succeeded in achieving your objectives, you will never feel any sense of
pride.
Recognizing your personal values will help you avoid this
ill-chosen situation. I need to warn you though that identifying
personal values is more difficult that identifying what is ideal and
general. One thing that you can do to recognize what you value in life
is to spend time reflecting and writing down the things that by far
matters to you.
Clearly, it is important to set your goals in
harmony with your values because if you don’t chances are, you may not
experience fulfillment and you might encounter problems when you have to
do something to attain your goals and sacrifice your values. If this
happen, there is a possibility that you will get discouraged,
demotivated and disinterested.
Follow this plan and you should have great success with your goals!
**To-do: **
Defining What You Want - "Ask Yourself Exercise:
It's
hard to get what you haven't acknowledged you want. Not knowing what
you want leaves a vague uneasiness and feeling of lack. Focus on what
you want by asking these questions:
1. What do you want that you don't have? 2. Why don't you have it? 3. What is the fear that's holding you back? 4. What's the worst that could happen if you go for it? 5. What's the best that could happen? 6. What's the next step you could take to move closer to what you want?
The clearer you are about your goals, the more successful you will be, and the greater will be your self-confidence.
Don't
forget to write down your steps in your success log and share your
feeling, comments or questions about this step in the group. :-)
