| | How Pain Impacts Your Life
How pain impacts your life can be different depending on your individual situations, but one thing is sure: chronic pain goes beyond the physical to change mental and emotional health and all the relationships around you. Here are just some of the ways in which pain affects your life and how you can help yourself.
Chronic pain is strongly linked to major mental conditions including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. A body having chronic pain continually sends stress signals to the brain, leading to an elevated perception of that pain and the perceived level of threat.
This explains some surprising statistics. Fibromyalgia patients experience depression at over 62% , and 56% have increased anxiety (the general population is only at 7% and 18%, respectively).
Chronic pain essentially changes the way the brain processes emotions and the pain itself. People with chronic pain are more likely to experience depression as the pain acts on the parts of the brain that regulate emotions and sleep. When we are sleep deprived, feelings of sadness, anxiety, and pain become stronger. The brain also begins to anticipate pain, leading to anxiety and PTSD.
Just as chronic pain can lead to depression, depression itself can lead to chronic pain. This is a vicious cycle that can be very difficult to break.
