Budget 2012: the effect on international assignments and relocation
Last month's Budget Statement saw the announcement of Britain's fiscal forecasts, as well as the plans for growth, spending and credit easing. Tom Richards, director of Grant Thornton UK LLP, spoke to Re:locate about how international assignments and relocations would be affected by the 2012 Budget. The 2012 Budget contained some new items relevant to international assignments and relocations, together with confirmations of several changes relevant to this area that had been announced previously.

New research: why trust matters in the workplace
If we believe that innovation and growth are what is needed to drive the recovery of the global economy, building trust must be high on the agenda. Commissioned from Cass Business School by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), a new report, Where has all the trust gone?, re-examines the issue of trust, exploring why it matters in the workplace and what can be done to repair it. The report finds that the crisis in trust pre-dates the economic downturn and is a function of a breakdown of five types of trust relationship: trust in each other; trust in the organisation; trust in external relations; trust in the leaders; and trust in the line manager.

High stakes M&A: Seven bets that matter places considerable, and refreshing, emphasis on the ‘people’ element of M&A deals. In their introduction, the report's author's say, "M&A deals present game-changing opportunities that can open doors to new markets, fill talent gaps, improve operational performance, and grow shareholder value. But too often, leaders exhibit risk-driven restraint when their people need to see contagious enthusiasm.

More wealthy people consider leaving Britain, survey suggests
Lloyds TSB International Wealth spoke to Re:locate about the results of a survey, which suggest that increasingly more of wealthy UK adults are considering a move overseas. New research from Lloyds TSB International Wealth reveals that a growing number of wealthy Britons are considering moving abroad in the near future, with 19% of UK adults with savings and investments, excluding property, of over £250,000, considering leaving Britain in the next two years. This is an increase from 17% six months ago and a pronounced rise from 14% just one year ago.

Prime minister visits Japan to encourage trade with UK
Prime minister David Cameron is visiting Japan, hoping to encourage further trade deals with the UK. Mr Cameron, who will travel to Burma later this week, said that his aim was to "fly the flag for Britain". Among his objectives is the finalisation of a new defence deal which would see the UK and Japan develop weapons together for the first time. Mr Cameron said that he was "completely upfront" about including several large defence contractors among his 40-strong business delegation. The prime minister hailed the UK's "very strong defence sector", whilst assuring reporters that "we have some of the toughest rules on defence exports anywhere in the world."

Report: cost management and tax compliance key issues for HR and global mobility professionals
Commissioned by Santa Fe Group, a survey of over 1,000 companies’ multinational mobility programmes has identified cost management and tax compliance as the key priorities for HR and mobility professionals The Global Mobility Survey Report, which contains comment from some of the mobility industry’s leading experts, identified expanding operations within existing markets as the largest driver of assignment activity. The results are collected from 1,119 company respondents from across North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Asia and the Pacific region, and span the complete range of industry sectors.
