TOP STORIES THIS MONTH

Relocation wins from the budget!

Reaction to the UK Budget March 2012The oil and gas sector is at the heart of relocation and energy industry lobbying has paid off with tax breaks for some small oil and gas fields in the North Sea, which should lead to more exploration and ultimately more mobility. The industry body Oil & Gas UK estimates the ‘field allowance’ package could eventually lead to £10bn of investment.

The good news that GlaxoSmithKline is to invest £350 in a new manufacturing site at Ulverston in Cumbria is also, surely good news for the wide range of professionals and suppliers supporting their domestic and international mobility. The investment in the UK is a result of the ‘patent box’ introduced by Labour to promote research and development, offering low tax on UK patents and confirmed by the Coalition on Budget Day to be brought in from 2013.

Mondissimo 2012, a French perspective on mobility

Mondissimo 2012The Mondissimo Convention in Paris pulled together an interesting mix of exhibitors across the global mobility spectrum.  It was good to see representation from familiar global players alongside the French based and European companies.

Visitors welcomed the opportunity to talk and exchange views and clearly valued the opportunity to open dialogue with potential suppliers. It is good to be reminded of the importance of building relationships and the trust that can develop  following a personal meeting even if it is only for a few minutes.

Hospitality always goes down well in France and a glass of champagne or in our case, the offer of tempting shortbread or traditional British sweets, proved a hit with delegates. French speakers are much appreciated and those with good linguists on their team would have benefited the most, but the atmosphere was warm and welcoming to all.

There was a comprehensive programme of seminars in French but also a healthy number of presentations in English. Topics ranged from the complexities of managing international assignments, immigration and risk avoidance to country specific presentations.

It is easy to assume that everyone is advancing at the same rate across global frontiers and focusing on the same destinations but just as time is never wasted going over fundamental best practice principles it is wise to reflect on national perspective and the lense the world is viewed through. Not surprisingly cultural awareness was high on the agenda.

See the special section created for a flavour of the Mondissimo Convention, mobility issues and trends.

And keep abreast of developments and discussions at www.facebook.com/likerelocate and www.twitter.com/relocatemag

We also welcome your views and comments on managing international assignments and the burning issues from the French perspective on an ongoing basis.

Please contribute to the French section or tell us what you need to know to manage international assignments in or out of France.

Contributions in French are welcome!

Canada in focus at global mobility conference

Relocation to CanadaOne of the major themes of this year's Mondissimo International Trade and Global Mobility Convention - which took place in Paris this week - was relocation to Canada.

With the Canadian Embassy and the Quebec Immigration Bureau among the exhibitors, attendees were able to get the latest advice on potential assignments to the North American nation.

Canada was also the focus of a number of talks throughout the two-day event. The Quebec Immigration Bureau hosted a session entitled "Is Quebec made for you? Are you made for Quebec?", which provided practical tips for those considering relocating to the Francophone province.

Challenges of relocating to Brazil are manageable, say experts at Mondissimo 2012

Christ the Redeemer, Rio, BrazilThe challenges involved in relocating to Brazil shouldn't be seen as insurmountable, experts told delegates at the Mondissimo International Trade and Global Mobility Convention this week.

Whilst all of the the BRIC nations came under focus during the two-day conference, it was Brazil that gathered the most attention from most delegates. The South American nation boasts one of the world's fastest-growing economies, and will have the opportunity to present itself on the world stage when the football World Cup takes place in 2014.

Celebrating the British character

Celebrating the British CharacterInspired by Danny Boyle’s comments about choreographing the Olympics opening ceremony, Re:locate asked David Crawford, partner at Fragomen LLP, who relocated from Australia to London in 2009, for his views on the British character.

Living in the UK, I am struck by the friendly informality of people more than clichéd stuffiness. The sellers at local markets, cab drivers, publicans and B&B hosts all share a warmth I have enjoyed equally at business meetings and luncheons.
