Re:locate: keeping you in touch

Relocate Magazine Winter 2011/2012Welcome to Re:locate Extra – the newsletter that keeps you informed of the latest developments in the world of relocation.

The Winter 2011/12 issue of Re:locate (out early December) is full of topical features and the latest relocation news. As well as expert analysis of tax and pensions issues for assignees and timely practical and policy advice on crisis management, we’ll bring you key themes and analysis from the WERC and CIPD conferences, plus tips on meeting Russia’s relocation challenges.

This issue’s Country Profile looks at the challenges and rewards of doing business in Africa. Our removals feature considers how operators are driving innovation in tough times, while our education features will cover getting the best value from independent schools, the new breed of school entrance exam, and how to navigate the state-school appeals process. Property coverage will include a UK housing market update and developments and trends in serviced accommodation.

And, as the deadline for entries nears, we’ll have all the latest on the Re:locate Awards 2011/12.

TOP STORIES THIS MONTH

CIPD conference coverage

CIPD Annual Conference and Exhibition 2011 ManchesterThose who travelled to Manchester for the CIPD’s Annual Conference and Exhibition should have found the journey well worthwhile. This three day conference is the highlight of the HR calendar and draws an increasingly international audience with delegates from countries as diverse as Nigeria and New Zealand to Malta and Sri Lanka.

The light and airy exhibition space of the Manchester Central venue encouraged a good flow of visitors. It was great to have the opportunity to catch-up with so many HR from the midlands and the north, happy not to have to travel south to keep up with latest developments and trends. The economic climate is certainly still biting but the mood was purposeful and the conference themes of leadership, trust and engagement were being taken on board to build better organisations for the future.

We were hugely encouraged by the number of visitors that sought out the Re:locate stand to say hello and receive their copy of The Pocket Guide to Relocation and latest issues of the magazine. There were many interesting conversations with international delegates keen to learn the latest thinking on managing international assignments and relocation trends.

It was good to see the relocation industry represented by Re:locate Award winner Beswick Relocation Services and Sterling Relocation.

This year’s conference was covered by a team of three journalists Fiona Murchie, Ruth Holmes and Jack Lang to bring you hot topics and expert opinion which will be covered in our Winter issue and in themes throughout Re:locate magazine in 2012.  There is coverage of key sessions in the events section of our website with more to come over the coming weeks.

Public-sector strikes over pensions could cost £500 million, Government warns

Public Sector StrikesThis week’s public sector strikes could cost the UK £500 million and lead to job losses, the government has said today.

More than two million workers are expected to join the strike action on 30 November over changes to public sector pensions.

Downing Street has claimed that closed schools will stop many parents going to work, which will supposedly have an impact on output.

“There is no question the strikes will have an impact”, said the prime minister’s official spokesman.

CBI: transparency and trust key to UK business prospects

Business PeopleCompanies must aim to build public trust in order to ensure the UK's economic future, according to the director-general of the Confederation of British Industry.

Speaking at the business organisation’s annual conference, John Cridland warned that the current reputation of business and its leaders is “one of greed” and that this could damage the country’s recovery.

Mr Cridland quoted a study by Ipsos MORI that showed that less than a third of UK adults “generally trust business leaders to tell the truth.”

Rethinking room service – understanding preferences of female hotel guests

Room ServiceA new study has revealed that many women feel that hotel room service is overly geared towards men.

Maiden-voyage.com, a business travel network for professional women, conducted a survey amongst professional women around the world, seeking to discover what women really want from room service. Of the 100 women interviewed, 53% stated that they felt hotel room service was generally tailored towards men, with menus of high carb, meaty dishes discouraging women from staying in to dine.

Thomson Reuters names world's 100 most innovative companies

Thomson Reuters names world top 100 most innovative companiesThomson Reuters has unveiled a list of the world's 100 most innovative organisations, with the USA accounting for 40 entries.

The list was based on a study of product patents. As well as volume, the authors of the report looked at success (how often a company's applications are granted), together with global reach and influence based on how often patents are cited in future applications.

Disappointingly, only one British company (Unilever) made it into the worldwide top 100, leaving the country ranked alongside the tiny principality of Liechtenstein.
