Re:locate: keeping you in touch
Welcome to Re:locate Extra – the newsletter that keeps you informed of the latest developments in the world of relocation. Out now, the Autumn issue of Re:locate is full of must-read topical features. We continue our coverage of Asia Pacific, while our Country Profile analyses the state of relocation in, and to, the USA (see new countries on the website). The latest part of our series on risk considers the implications of the UK’s new Bribery Act for relocation. Our hot topic is the UK’s beleaguered housing market. Sue Shortland analyses the findings of a Brunel University research project on global talent management, and our case study on Save the Children UK shows how this international charity is realising its strategic ambitions through inspiring leadership. As the new school year begins, we look at what relocating parents need to know about school admissions and bring you advice from education professionals on settling relocating children in to a new school. This issue also sees the launch of the Re:locate Awards 2011/12. Find out all about this year’s fabulous sponsors, and how you can enter relocation’s premier awards. www.relocatemagazine.com TOP STORIES THIS MONTH UK unemployment rises again to 2.51 million
The latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that the number of unemployed people in the UK rose again in the second quarter of 2011. The unemployment figure now stands at 2.51 million - 7.9% of the working population. The figure is an increase of 80,000 on the previous three-month period, and constitutes the sharpest rise for almost two years. The data revealed that private sector employment actually increased by over 40,000 in the second quarter, only to be cancelled out by tumbling public sector figures. John Philpott, the Chief Economic Adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, labelled this disparity "worrying."

UK education 'falls behind globally', with high tuition fees and large class sizes
A report released this week by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) reveals some unwelcome news for the UK education sector, including disproportionately high primary school class sizes, highest-ranking university tuition fees, and comparatively low higher education participation rates. The OECD report, Education at a Glance 2011, compares education data from 34 member nations across the developed world. Among the findings, the report has shown that under-11s in the UK are taught in classes with greater pupil numbers than in many other countries, including Estonia, Mexico, Poland, Slovenia and Russia. Number of Americans living below poverty line hits record high According to the latest data from the US Census Bureau, the number of American citizens living below the poverty line reached 46.2 million last year. The 2010 poverty rate of 15.1% is the highest since 1993, and is significantly higher than the 2009 figure (14.3%). The definition of poverty employed by the Census Bureau is an annual income of $22,314 (£14,129) or less for a family of four, or $11,139 for an individual. Worryingly, the number of people below this poverty line in the USA has now risen for four consecutive years.

Grin up north: Yorkshire dwellers are country's happiest
Adults who live in Yorkshire are the happiest people in the UK, a recent survey has revealed. Mintel's annual British Lifestyles study found that almost 60% of the county's residents are satisfied with their lives, compared with a national average of 50%. Londoners, on the other hand, are the least content; less than half declared themselves happy. The statistics, Mintel claims, show a correlation between happiness and the amount of open space in a given area. Yorkshire, with its rolling countryside, is far more conducive to contented living than the UK's cramped capital. Read more...
