In May, at the beginning of Mustard Seed’s second school term—the peak time for sports, games, and extracurricular activities—the Moxie Sisters Club took on an ambitious new challenge: growing oyster mushrooms. 

Thanks to funding from longtime supporter Nancy Squires, the girls visited a local mushroom farm, learned to prepare the growing medium, mastered pasteurization techniques, and created their own hanging gardens for inoculation (See photos below).

Before the term ended, the Moxie Sisters were harvesting mushrooms galore—a remarkable achievement in a community where mushrooms are beloved but no one else has successfully grown them. 

The girls now possess skills that can generate real income long after they leave school. The excitement has spread beyond the club—even their parents are asking to learn! The Moxie Sisters haven't just grown mushrooms; they've cultivated a pathway to financial independence.
