Subject: The Iron Guru’s Key to Quality Muscle Development

Hi Friend,

Last time we talked about rest-pause training and learned how this method accelerates muscle gains.

We also showed how to incorporate Japanese drops sets into your training. The result? More muscle growth when compared to using just low repetitions.

But why does rest-pause training work so well?

One of the primary reasons is how it allows you to perform more work with the same heavy load. Indeed, this benefit prompted “Dinosaur Training” Brooks Kubik to comment: “Heavy singles made me bigger and stronger than any other combination of the sets and reps I’ve ever tried!”

Yet rest-pause training is nothing new. Unashamedly old-school, trainees have been using these principles for decades in the strength and fitness game.

One noteworthy example is the Iron Guru Vince Gironda who championed this method back when Elvis Presley first topped the music charts in the 1950s. This visionary physique master and coach to the stars routinely promoted workouts that utilised a 15-30 second rest between sets — his famous 6x6 and 8x8 programs are fine examples.

Key to Quality Muscle

The secret to this style of training is to complete all your sets in as little time as possible. In fact, Gironda said that this was the key to quality muscle development.

Vince called the 8 sets of 8 reps the “honest workout” because of its ability to rapidly build muscle size while simultaneously stripping body fat. He went onto promise: “Keep to 8x8 and your muscle fibre will plump out, giving you a solid mass of muscle density as a result.”

These concepts seemed radical half a century ago and were treated as bodybuilding heresy. Yet eventually many of Vince’s methods — including this version of rest-pause training — were later accepted as bodybuilding truth.

When quizzed about his methods, the Iron Guru advised: “If in doubt, try these concepts and try others. Results count. Examine. Test. Then make up your own mind.”

Until next time,
