Hi Friend,
Anxious about how to stay fit? The good news is, it’s never too late to start working out.
According to a recent report from Public Health England, life expectancy amongst older people is at an all-time high. Indeed, after turning 50, men live on average another 34 years until 84, while women can expect to survive and thrive for another 36 years to 86.
Because of this, it becomes imperative for middle-agers to remain fit for as long as possible.
So what’s the best exercise for over-50s?
Personal trainer Dan Wheeler is the founder of Life Changing Fitness, and agrees building strength is the key factor in enjoying optimum fitness in your 50s and beyond.
Dan says: “As you get older, osteoporosis and arthritis can be real concerns, but building muscle can really alleviate the risk. Weight lifting — and these can be small weights — adds resistance to exercise and that strengthens bones, muscle tissue, ligaments and tendons.”
And that’s not all. Not only does strength training beef up your body, but it can help REVERSE the signs of ageing.
Dan explains: “I recently took one 75-year-old woman from not ever having lifted a single weight in the gym to performing Olympic weight-lifting moves in just 12 weeks. There were significant increases in not only her strength but her flexibility and mobility. Her cognitive functions improved in that time and so did her sleep.”
Impressive, huh?
And with the right type of training advice, there really is no reason why anyone can’t feel in their best physical shape after the age of 50.
Until next time,
Squat for Glory!
