Subject: Dirty Lies and the Land of the Genetic Giants

Hi Friend,

It sucks. It’s a big, dirty lie.

What am I talking about here? I’m saying, one of the most widely accepted beliefs about exercise simply is not true.

And the thing is, this belief about exercise is so deeply ingrained in our psyches that it stubbornly refuses to go away. The belief states: “The more exercise you do, the fitter and stronger you become.”

Do you know it? Sure you do. This big, dirty lie is right up there with the link between exercise and fat loss — and just like a protein-fuelled blender bomb, we hungrily gobble it up.

But wait… surely if you train hard and regularly, then you MUST be making your body fit and strong — right?

Hmm… afraid not. You see, life is not that fair. Also, the science confirms this with studies showing there is a huge discrepancy and variation in how people actually respond to an exercise regimen. In short: NO particular routine guarantees favourable results.

Ouch.

A recent study from Finland reveals the vastness of this chasm.

The guys in the lab coats took 175 untrained, middle-aged volunteers and had them perform a 21-week training course. The participants either did strength training twice a week, endurance training twice a week, or a workout that was a combination of both.

Results were mixed. But it quickly gets alarming. When the numbers were compared for the strength training group, some people increased their power output by a whopping 87% while others got weaker and performed 12% worse.

Huh! How did that happen?

Well, this is nothing new. In fact, stuff like this happens in the science world all the time.

You see, because science has a habit of lumping all the data together, results get “averaged out”. This means, in an experiment like this, non-responders get treated as outliers and are commonly ignored.

It’s painful to hear, but if you are a non-responder, you essentially become invisible.

The implication of this and other studies, is that there is a huge range in people’s responses to exercise — everyone from elite super-responders (easy-gainers) at one end of the fitness spectrum to non-responders (hard-gainers) at the opposite end.

So the belief that states, “The more exercise you do, the fitter and stronger you become,” isn’t exactly true, is it?

Ugh-huh. Not at all.

In the real world, only the fortunate few and genetic elite benefit from this fitness model.

Like I said earlier. It sucks. It's a big, dirty lie.

So what are we gonna do about it?

That's easy. If you find yourself struggling to make gains, employing a Hardgainer Routine is a terrific place to start.
