Hi Friend,
You're never too old to pump iron as the following real-life story shows.
Meet forklift driver Sam “Sonny” Bryant Jr. He’s 71-years-old, though you would never guess it by his chiselled, rock-hard physique.
Looking like someone 30 years his junior, he is a real-life poster child for weight lifting.
Georgia-born “Sonny” has been weight training for almost three decades, long before gymnasiums were commonplace on your high street corner. Do the math and you’ll realise this makes him a relative newcomer to the iron game, as he didn’t pick up a barbell until the age of 44!
Yet the attraction was instant. Catching the bodybuilding bug not only beefed up Sam's body, but helped him discover the secret to staying young.
He says: “People have the misconception that age makes you old, but I realise that it’s a state of mind that makes you old. Age is just a number, and it gives most people — the majority of people — a reason to be lazy and not do anything.”
Sam recalls: “I hear a lot of people telling me, ‘Oh, wait till I get their age.’ Then I tell them how old I am and it kind of embarrasses them. But I tell them that to make a point. That the inactivity and the thought process is what makes them old… I really, honestly, I’ve never felt like I aged since I started bodybuilding at 44. I don’t feel no different.”
Valuable Training Advice
Refusing to let age slow him down, bodybuilding champ Sam regularly begins his days deadlifting more than twice his bodyweight.
Often putting guys half his age to shame, he is happy to share this valuable training advice:
“Age shouldn’t hinder you from doing anything,” Sam says. “People ask me when I’m going to act my age. Well, I’m not an actor, and who set the rules about how you’re supposed to act at a certain age, anyway? I’m doing it because I love it, and age don’t play a factor in how I feel in what I’m doing.”
