First Quarter 2022
From the Executive Director's Corner
This year, we are thrilled to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of MoneySKILL. Since it was launched in 2002, MoneySKILL has grown into a comprehensive online personal finance curriculum, reached 1.3 million users, and has remained free for educators, parents, students, nonprofits, and many more.

We are so grateful for all the MoneySKILL instructors who continue to promote financial education and have helped the program become the success it is today. In recognition of the MoneySKILL anniversary – as well as Financial Literacy Month this April – we hope you consider taking some time to spread the word about the value of financial education and the free resources available through the AFSA Education Foundation. If you’re wondering where to begin, we’ve compiled a list of 20 activities to get you started:

  • Follow us on Twitter.
  • Like our Facebook page.
  • Post about MoneySKILL and our other resources within your social media networks.
  • Offer to deliver a MoneySKILL workshop at a local school or community center.
  • Mention MoneySKILL to other teachers, parents, or work colleagues.
  • Email school administrators or local education officials about MoneySKILL, including our latest impact evaluation results.
  • Share information about MoneySKILL with local businesses and nonprofits - custom MoneySKILL courses can be developed upon request at info@moneyskill.org!
  • Complete a few MoneySKILL modules with family members interested in learning more about personal finance.
  • Use MoneySKILL or some of our other resources as a starting point for conversations about finances with your family.
  • Gather student quotes and post one each school day of the month in your classroom showcasing how students have benefited from MoneySKILL.
  • Encourage students to promote financial education and feature MoneySKILL in school newsletters and on school billboard signs and website(s).
  • Offer extra credit opportunities for students to share in 75 words or less how MoneySKILL has made a positive difference in their lives.
  • Tap student leaders to involve their peers in financial education efforts such as visiting the elementary school to share about the difference between needs and wants.
  • Join in on the fun and share your own testimony as to why you offer MoneySKILL to your students and how it makes a difference.
  • Connect student volunteers with nonprofit organizations such as the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.
  • Host a schoolwide assembly featuring a dynamic speaker addressing the importance of financial education.
  • Have students keep track of their own MoneySKILLs for one day and report back on why these skills are so important and needed.
  • Tap an articulate student leader to shout it from the rooftops and jointly contact local newspapers, radio stations, and other outlets to let them know that MoneySKILL is used in your classroom and that financial literacy matters.
  • Help us celebrate MoneySKILL’s 20th anniversary and have a class activity with refreshments!
  • Send a written or video testimonial to info@moneyskill.org describing how you use MoneySKILL, the benefits of the program, and/or any other relevant comments.
Hopefully these tips provide some fresh inspiration for Financial Literacy Month activities. We look forward to seeing how you help to get the word out about financial education over the next month and beyond.

Best wishes,
Rhonda Ashburn

Announcements
Are you interested in a new opportunity to showcase your financial educator skills, earn some extra money, and help promote MoneySKILL? We are currently recruiting MoneySKILL instructors to serve as MoneySKILL Mentors at various regional educator conferences. Mentors would be expected to host MoneySKILL exhibit booths at conferences (such as state career tech events, Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy activities, family and consumer sciences conferences, and more) and potentially deliver short MoneySKILL workshops. MoneySKILL Mentors will earn a competitive daily stipend based on conference exhibit and presentation duties as well as reimbursement for per diem expenses. At this time, we are particularly interested in individuals working in Virginia, Texas, and Oklahoma, but encourage anyone interested to reach out regardless of location. To learn more about the role and how to apply, please contact info@moneyskill.org.
AFSA Education Foundation on the Military Money Show Podcast: Earlier this year, the AFSA Education Foundation’s executive director, Rhonda Ashburn, joined military money expert Lacey Langford on her weekly podcast. Listen to the episode here to learn more about how military families can teach their children and communities about personal finance.
MoneySKILL Curriculum Updates Completed in December: As a part of the AFSA Education Foundation’s routine curriculum review, MoneySKILL modules were updated in December to stay up-to-date. The core learning objectives and course flow have remained the same. If you ever have any feedback or suggestions for future review cycles, we welcome you to reach out at info@moneyskill.org.
