Why you need Vitamin D, real talk on immunity, and #OaktreeStories!

November mean changing weather - changing weather means extra strain on our bodies - extra strain on our bodies means we are vulnerable to sickness and we don't want that!

Below you'll find some helpful articles to educate you on your immune system and how to keep it boosted in this season. Let's stay healthy together!

Do you know how to take care of your immune system?

By Dr. Marie-Pier - Downtown Chiropractor

That time of year has already started: people are getting sick. And this year we aren’t just dealing with the regular cold and flu, we’ve also got Covid-19. We often see that people in the same social and family circles will pass along their germs and that everyone gets sick, but have you ever stopped to wonder why it doesn’t ALWAYS happen that way?

Cue your lesson on immunity! Your immune system is made up of different organs and cells that work together to protect you from bacteria, viruses, and toxins. You actually have two parts to your immune system: the innate immune system (which you are born with), and the adaptive immune system (which you develop when your body is exposed to microbes).

Your innate immune system is your rapid response system. It is inherited and is active from the moment baby is born. When this system recognizes an invader, it goes into action immediately. The adaptive (or acquired) immune system produces antibodies to protect your body from a specific invader. These antibodies are developed after the body has been exposed to the invader and stay in your body. It takes a few days for these antibodies to develop, but after that first exposure, your immune system will recognize the invader and defend against it. This means that for your immune system to grow and get better, it must be continuously exposed to new things.

A healthy immune system requires a healthy nervous system. If your nervous system is working optimally,  it is able to quickly identify invaders and initially amplify local immune responses to try to destroy the invaders. Your health and your ability to fight disease relies on the health of your nervous system. If there is stress on your nervous system, it isn't able to reliably transmit information from your body to your brain and vice versa. The healthier your nervous system is, the healthier you are, and therefore your body’s ability to fight disease is much greater!

"Challenge Your Normal.."

"Sometimes we’ve been dealing with our symptoms for so long that it has become our new “normal”. What we need to remember is that symptoms may be common but they are absolutely not normal.⁣
⁣
Did you know that 50-70% of adults have had a headache in the last year? Headaches are actually ranked the 3rd highest cause of years lost due to disability and the 9th most common reason patients see a doctor. ⁣
⁣
Seeing a chiropractor or acupuncturist is a holistic approach that has been proven very effective for many types of headaches and in MEDICATION FREE.

As a Chiropractor I have the opportunity to look for structural problems. By determining the root cause we are able to perform specific chiropractic adjustments to take the pressure off of the nervous system to allow proper function and movement to the muscles, joints, and bones. ⁣

Being in pain doesn’t have

to be your “normal”. "

SUPPORT YOUR BODY IN THE CHANGING SEASON

Changes in weather can be very hard on our bodies. In these times we do lots of stuff to keep boosted! You know what we do in the clinic of course -

but what do we do also at home?

  • Vitamin D + C in higher doses than normal (see our newsletter for dosage)

  • Exercise (even light will help move all your fluids and help flush out the bad)

  • Adequate sleep - this cannot be overstated

  • Avoid or decrease sugar - viruses and bacteria love to feed on sugar (some of us do this better than others!!)

  • Lymphatic self massage of head and neck

  • Eat warming food - less stress on the digestive system = less stress on body overall

Waking up with sore and stiff muscles and joints?

Feeling less energy with the time change? 😴Feeling stressed and run down? 😒

With the cooler weather coming, perhaps you need an immune boost! A healthy body starts from within, and for you, it could be finding time to relax and destress.

One of my favorite ways to do this is a magnesium bath 🛁

Oil sprays, supplements or soaking in a salt bath are different methods to increase your intake. You can also eat some veggies! 🍃

I prefer transdermally in the tub as it covers the greatest area and provides whole body relaxation while reducing muscle soreness.

Magnesium has been shown to reduce skin conditions and inflammation, release stress and tight musculature, and improve sleep quality 👍

Improved sleep and reduced stress helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, and that can improve your immune health.

We carry @ancient.minerals at Oaktree, but you can also take it orally as magnesium bisyglycinate. Speak to your health provider to learn more! -Dr. Katrina

Are you getting your Vitamin D?

Your body NEEDS it!

-Dr. Emilie Perras. Downtown Chiropractor

One way to drastically reduce your risk of getting sick and countless other chronic diseases is to optimize your levels of vitamin D - either by safe sun exposure or taking a high-quality supplement.

The evidence supporting the power of Vitamin D is overwhelming, yet a great deal of people around the world have never even heard about it! Unfortunately this may be in part because there’s no money to be made on selling vitamin D (it’s one of the most inexpensive supplements around, and sun exposure is free!). So we can’t count on major corporations to help get the message out.

We highly recommend browsing through studies to see it with your own eyes, but we’ll summarize some of the amazing benefits here:

Can vitamin D fight colds and the flu? Yes! It’s one of the go-to things we increase if we have a cold. Help prevent obesity? It sure can. Tackle depression, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis? Yes, yes and yes!

Low levels of vitamin D in your blood have long been correlated with higher risk of heart disease and heart attacks. It is estimated that 25-50% of any health care budget could be saved by encouraging adequate vitamin D serum levels.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

The best way to optimize your vitamin D is through safe sun exposure, or using a safe UVB tanning bed (they are not all safe). However, in Canada we do not have access to regular sun exposure on a large portion of our bare skin, so a vitamin D3 supplement is necessary.

Based on the most recent research, the current recommendation for dosage is 35 IU’s of vitamin D per pound of body weight. So for a child weighing 40 pounds, the recommended average dose would be 1,400 IU’s daily, and for a 170-pound adult, the dose would be nearly 6,000 IU’s.

However, Vitamin D requirements are highly individual and dependent on factors, such as the color of your skin, your location, and how much sunshine you’re exposed to on a regular basis. The only way to determine the correct dose is to get your blood tested.

Getting the correct test is the first step in this process, as there are TWO vitamin D tests currently being offered: 1,25(OH)D, and 25(OH)D. The correct test your doctor needs to order is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is the better marker of overall D status.

The “normal” 25-hydroxyvitamin D lab range is between 20-56 ng/ml. However, studies have shown your vitamin D level should never be below 32 ng/ml, and any levels below 20 ng/ml are considered serious deficiency states (increasing your risk of as many as 16 different cancers and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis).

The OPTIMAL value that you’re looking for is 50-65 ng/ml. This range applies for everyone; children, adolescents, adults and seniors.

Here at Oaktree we sell Innate Choice Vitamin D drops (which is what we take for ourselves and our kids). It is top quality, organic and contaminant-free.
