One way to drastically reduce your risk of getting sick and countless other chronic diseases is to optimize your levels of vitamin D - either by safe sun exposure or taking a high-quality supplement.
The evidence supporting the power of Vitamin D is overwhelming, yet a great deal of people around the world have never even heard about it! Unfortunately this may be in part because thereâs no money to be made on selling vitamin D (itâs one of the most inexpensive supplements around, and sun exposure is free!). So we canât count on major corporations to help get the message out.Â
We highly recommend browsing through studies to see it with your own eyes, but weâll summarize some of the amazing benefits here:
Can vitamin D fight colds and the flu? Yes! Itâs one of the go-to things we increase if we have a cold. Help prevent obesity? It sure can. Tackle depression, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis? Yes, yes and yes!
Low levels of vitamin D in your blood have long been correlated with higher risk of heart disease and heart attacks. It is estimated that 25-50% of any health care budget could be saved by encouraging adequate vitamin D serum levels.
How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?
The best way to optimize your vitamin D is through safe sun exposure, or using a safe UVB tanning bed (they are not all safe). However, in Canada we do not have access to regular sun exposure on a large portion of our bare skin, so a vitamin D3 supplement is necessary.
Based on the most recent research, the current recommendation for dosage is 35 IUâs of vitamin D per pound of body weight. So for a child weighing 40 pounds, the recommended average dose would be 1,400 IUâs daily, and for a 170-pound adult, the dose would be nearly 6,000 IUâs.Â
However, Vitamin D requirements are highly individual and dependent on factors, such as the color of your skin, your location, and how much sunshine youâre exposed to on a regular basis. The only way to determine the correct dose is to get your blood tested.
Getting the correct test is the first step in this process, as there are TWO vitamin D tests currently being offered: 1,25(OH)D, and 25(OH)D. The correct test your doctor needs to order is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is the better marker of overall D status.Â
The ânormalâ 25-hydroxyvitamin D lab range is between 20-56 ng/ml. However, studies have shown your vitamin D level should never be below 32 ng/ml, and any levels below 20 ng/ml are considered serious deficiency states (increasing your risk of as many as 16 different cancers and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis).Â
The OPTIMAL value that youâre looking for is 50-65 ng/ml. This range applies for everyone; children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
Here at Oaktree we sell Innate Choice Vitamin D drops (which is what we take for ourselves and our kids). It is top quality, organic and contaminant-free.
