Subject: Our mission this month @ Oaktree!

It’s almost 2022!!!

We wanted to say a BIG thank you to our amazing patients and team. It wasn’t easy to

navigate 2021 but you make it all so enjoyable and worth it!

I want to talk about 3 missions we have right now: At Oaktree we always have a

MISSION OF HELPING OUR PATIENTS thrive in health and life.

You may not know it but we truly REJOICE at your wins (big and small) and we

TRULY sympathize and are sad with you through your difficulties. You are our big

family. As a team we are always sharing stories of new babies, successes of function

restored, health gained together with all our clinics. We also pray for patients who are

struggling and try to help more when we can. We all think of you even when we’re not at

work.

In December, we have an EVEN BIGGER MISSION! It’s GOLD! We want to help more

people who are suffering, unsure where to turn or what to do with their health challenges.

If you haven’t given out your gold card yet, please do so! It can help someone else start

getting the care they need. It’s our favourite time of year because we get to meet some of

your friends and family (or your Uber drivers, lol)! Also, many people who are already

patients end up using the Gold card to try chiro or acu (if they currently only see one of

the disciplines at the clinic). So pass out the card, and get more if you need :)

Also in December we have a MISSION TO HELP OUR COMMUNITY. Each clinic is

helping out their community in their own way. Downtown and Orleans have an angel tree

with one or two families sponsored. You can take an angel from the tree and it tells you a

need/gift for that family. Bring it back and all the gifts will be brought to them right before Christmas. Stittsville is sponsoring a hamper to help families in need in their community. Please consider helping out!

We wish you all a very merry holiday season!

How Does Acupuncture Actually Work?

-Christina Najjar, downtown acupuncturist

When people find out what I do for a living, the question they most often ask me is, “How DOES acupuncture work?” or “Does it actually work?”

It works very well! I am continually amazed at the results I see in the clinic.

Many peer-reviewed studies have been conducted about the benefits of acupuncture for all kinds of health conditions and outcomes. For instance, we know that acupuncture has a higher rate of success than placebo for things like fertility, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and painful periods, among many, many others.

And while we have a general understanding of WHY acupuncture works, studies at the moment are trying to determine exactly HOW it works. Here are a few things we already do know.

When you have an injury or a chronic illness, there’s inflammation in your body. This is your body’s way of trying to heal the injury or address the issue causing the chronic illness. You can get medical tests (like blood work) that look for signs of inflammation.

Your body wants to heal that inflammation. It even has the tools to do so, in the right situation. The issue is that when your body experiences a lot of stress, it doesn’t have access to the tools to heal inflammation. When you’re stressed, your body is stuck in fight or flight mode, even if there’s no real danger. Healing is not a priority when your body is in survival mode.

One of the main things acupuncture does is activating your body’s relaxation response. That’s why people always seem so calm when they come out of their acupuncture treatment. And when your body isn’t in survival mode, it can start to heal.

Acupuncture also helps improve circulation. This is important for healing because your blood carries all kinds of cells that are meant to address inflammation. Your blood also helps clear out waste from your cells. This is crucial in reducing inflammation.

One of the ways that studies determine that acupuncture is working is by looking at inflammatory markers through blood tests. Studies continue to find an improvement in inflammation in groups receiving acupuncture.

So if you have an issue you want to address, whether chronic or recent, let’s get you relaxed!

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

By Dr. Marie-Pier, Stittsville chiropractor

How early can you start getting chiropractic care in your pregnancy? It's a question we often get, and one that Brianna knows the answer all too well! Being the receptionist at Oaktree Stittsville, she was already under regular chiropractic and acupuncture care before she got pregnant. She told us when she found out she was pregnant - it's especially important for acupuncture as there are certain points they avoid during pregnancy, and I started using the Webster technique with her (a specific chiropractic adjustment technique that helps decrease in-utero constraint).

Throughout her pregnancy, Brianna has been very active at home running her homestead and running the ship at Oaktree Stittsville. One would think that she would be very tired and sore, but overall she feels great! And she attributes most of that to getting her regular chiropractic and acupuncture care to ensure everything is functioning optimally. She knows how helpful these services are to helping women have pain-free pregnancies, and wishes everyone would start care as soon as possible - nothing breaks our hearts more than having a woman who is 35 weeks pregnant call in because she is in so much pain.

It's never too early to start care. Brianna has learned so much from her time here and both her mind and body is prepared for her birth. Empowering our patients is what we love to do at Oaktree - so if anyone you know has any questions about how we can help them, get them to reach out to us!
