I treat both men and women in my practice, but over the years I have found a larger portion of my clients are women. And why is that? In my experience, women tend to be more in tune with their health, both physical and emotional, and are more open to the idea of seeing practitioners to address any concerns. Though most issues I treat are experienced by both men and women, there are some that are definitely specific to female patients.
Menstrual irregularities are high on the list of reasons why a woman might come in. Endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD and painful periods, are all reasons someone might consider acupuncture. PMS has been normalized in society and yet it is my belief that any physical discomfort caused by what should be a normal bodily function is not “normal”. Would you think painful urination is normal? Of course not. Then why should our menses be any different?
I also see many patients to help them with their fertility goal. Both partners can benefit from acupuncture, but it is primarily women who come into the clinic for fertility concerns. Acupuncture can help balance hormones, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, enhance egg quality by increasing blood supply, oxygen, and nutrients, improve the quality and thickness of endometrium, and increase embryo implantation rates.
The benefits of acupuncture aren’t limited to fertility though. Once a patient is pregnant, regular treatments can ameliorate side effects such as heartburn, nausea, low energy, bloating, and swelling. In the final weeks of pregnancy we can do treatments for breech positioning or help with induction.
How about post birth? Are you having issues with milk production? Do you have a scar from your C Section? Do you suffer from weakened bladder control? These are all things acupuncture treatments can help with.
How about menopause? My mother suffered from hot flashes more than anyone I have ever met and I wish I knew then what I know now. Acupuncture can help. It has also shown positive results with brain fog, night sweats, water retention, weight gain, weakened bladder, and many other symptoms related to menopause.
Rather than wonder what it is like to feel your best self, why not try something new? Consider adding acupuncture to your health routine.
