Subject: October @ Oaktree! Women's Health & Hormones

Women's Health & Hormones

By Dr. Marie-Pier Sauriol, Stittsville Chiropractor

During the month of October, our focus is on women's health and hormones. While we love to take care of whole families, we have a special place in our hearts for women and strive to make Oaktree a safe haven. Our acupuncturists have a special interest in fertility care and hormonal health, and each clinic has a chiropractor who is Webster Technique certified (for pregnancy care). It certainly helps that (other than Martin), we're all women, so we get it!

So this month, you'll read a lot about women's health and hormones in this newsletter and in our social media. In that spirit, I want to share with you my personal journey so far with my own hormones. Like many other women, I was put on birth control as a teenager to help with my irregular cycle and acne. There were no talks about why my cycle was irregular or what else I could do to help manage it. The pill was simply the way to go.

I didn't learn about all the negative side effects of the pill until many years later when I was in chiropractic school. Even knowing about all of those wasn't enough to get me to stop taking the pill (I still didn't really understand how hormones worked and how important they were to overall health). Long story short, it wasn't until I was 24 that I made the decision to get off the pill and work on balancing my hormones naturally. Regular chiropractic care helped my nervous system stay out of sympathetic overdrive, and regular acupuncture care helped keep my cycle regular. I learned a lot about FAM (fertility awareness method) to avoid any unplanned pregnancies (5 years later and we're still going strong!) I'm now looking into taking a deeper dive into my health and hormones with a naturopath (more to come on that).

The search for optimal health is always an ongoing process. There's always something going on in life that can disrupt the perfectly curated homeostasis that you've worked so hard to create. But it's important to keep striving forward! If you're interested in learning more about the birth control pill, I highly suggest you watch the documentary 'The Business of Birth Control'. It's really eye opening!

As always, we're here to help you in your healing journey in whatever way we can, so please don't hesitate to reach out!

C-Section & Scar Release Therapy

By Dr. Katrina Greer, Orleans Chiropractor

Having a baby is a momentous, powerful, and life altering event. C-Section is one of the most common surgeries performed, with one out of three women giving birth via C-section. All surgeries can be difficult, even when planned, and with unforeseen medical issues, these scars tend to carry with them emotions that get locked away in the body. These emotions can relate to our journey, hardship, loss, grief and endurance.

C-sections are centered over the hip flexors and major organs, and their existence blocks the upwards movement of circulation and energy, which can interfere with healing post partum. Their anatomical location ensures problems in the fascia, muscles, nerves, bones, organs and systems, producing a straitjacket like effect throughout the entire body. C-sections cause sympathetic stress and can act as stress agonist, creating an environment for sickness and pain.

Scar Release Therapy (SRT) is a patented scar reduction technique that is simple and highly effective for reducing the negative influence your scar has throughout your body. This technique is not only shown to reduce local pain, but can reduce pain in the back, neck and shoulders.  Whether you are experiencing pain or restriction, this treatment can reduce the appearance of the scar, reduce underlying adhesions and improve your overall health and healing!

This treatment is now be offered at our Oaktree Orleans location by Dr. Katrina!

Acupuncture and Women's Health

By Veronique Savoie, Orleans and Downtown Acupuncturist

I treat both men and women in my practice, but over the years I have found a larger portion of my clients are women. And why is that? In my experience, women tend to be more in tune with their health, both physical and emotional, and are more open to the idea of seeing practitioners to address any concerns. Though most issues I treat are experienced by both men and women, there are some that are definitely specific to female patients.

Menstrual irregularities are high on the list of reasons why a woman might come in. Endometriosis, PCOS, PMDD and painful periods, are all reasons  someone might consider acupuncture. PMS has been normalized in society and yet it is my belief that any physical discomfort caused by what should be a normal bodily function is not “normal”. Would you think painful urination is normal? Of course not. Then why should our menses be any different?

I also see many patients to help them with their fertility goal. Both partners can benefit from acupuncture, but it is primarily women who come into the clinic for fertility concerns. Acupuncture can help balance hormones, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, enhance egg quality by increasing blood supply, oxygen, and nutrients, improve the quality and thickness of endometrium, and increase embryo implantation rates.

The benefits of acupuncture aren’t limited to fertility though.  Once a patient is pregnant, regular treatments can ameliorate side effects such as heartburn, nausea, low energy, bloating, and swelling. In the final weeks of pregnancy we can do treatments for breech positioning or help with induction.

How about post birth? Are you having issues with milk production? Do you have a scar from your C Section? Do you suffer from weakened bladder control? These are all things acupuncture treatments can help with.

How about menopause? My mother suffered from hot flashes more than anyone I have ever met and I wish I knew then what I know now. Acupuncture can help. It has also shown positive results with brain fog, night sweats, water retention, weight gain, weakened bladder, and many other symptoms related to menopause.

Rather than wonder what it is like to feel your best self, why not try something new?   Consider adding acupuncture to your health routine.

The Power of Doing Nothing

By Dr. Emilie Perras, Downtown Chiropractor

3 Health Benefits of Doing Nothing - most women need to do this!!

If you thrive on having a jam-packed schedule and multiple items on your daily to-do list, consider doing something different—nothing!

Contrary to popular belief, doing nothing can bring significant health benefits. Here are three.

1. Stress Reduction: In a world where burnout is common, taking time to do nothing can help reduce stress. Studies show that constant work without breaks can increase cortisol levels, leading to anxiety and depression.

2. Improved Focus: When you constantly multitask, your brain gets overloaded, leading to decreased productivity. Doing nothing gives your mind the much-needed break, thereby improving focus and creativity.

3. Better Sleep: High-stress levels can interfere with sleep. By practicing mindfulness or simply doing nothing, you can relax your mind, promoting better sleep.

In the pursuit of productivity, don’t forget the power of doing nothing.

It’s not laziness; it’s a necessary recharge for your mental and physical health.
