May: Pregnancy, Fertility, and Mother's Day!

By Dr. Katrina Greer, Orleans Chiropractor

May brings spring flowers, Mother’s Day, and for some, a new baby!

The journey to Motherhood looks different for every family, and at Oaktree we want to be right alongside you, lending you a helping hand. We truly believe that you will not find a more passionate team of Perinatal Health Care providers in the city 😊

Preconception and Fertility challenges is something often seen by our acupuncturists, and chiropractic adjustments can help too! Certain acupuncture points direct energy and blood flow to your organs, calm the nervous system, and regulate hormone production.

Chiropractic adjustments also decrease stress, improve nervous system function to your reproductive system, and help connect your brain to all the areas that secrete hormones and balance your body.

When planning to conceive, you want your body’s environment to be in optimal health to enhance your fertility. This includes both partners, not just mom. During pregnancy, prenatal care and Webster Technique is offered at all of our clinics. Specific adjustments can benefit both you and your growing baby, while acupuncture can prepare you for an easier labour and delivery.

We want to help mothers become more familiar with the birth process, trust and understand their bodies. There is so much information on how to support this life change, and we can help you sift through it. From choosing your birth team (OB, midwife, doula), to assistive devices and pacifiers, we can ease some of the mental load this transition holds.

This month we are celebrating Mother’s Day!

We want to hold a special day for any woman who has been a caretaker for a child in their lifetime, whether biological or otherwise. It truly takes a village to support not only a newborn, but the mothers themselves. Remember to do something for a new mom this month, even it’s just words of encouragement, a nurturing meal, or supporting them and allowing them time for rest and self-care.

At Oaktree, we offer Perinatal Rehab programs, allowing moms to heal postpartum, connect with a community, and bring their babies along. We look forward to supporting you through preconception, pregnancy and post natal care!

We hope you can join us on May 4th, from 12-1pm at Oaktree Orleans, for a talk surrounding Prenatal Chiropractic & Acupuncture Care.

By Veronique Savoie, Downtown and Orleans Acupuncturist

In celebrating Mothers this month I want to talk about some of my favorite experiences helping mothers.

In acupuncture I see many clients for fertility, and though some treatments can have that focus in mind, when I treat patients their overall health is the main goal. There are some acu points that are more common to use in fertility, but there isn’t a ‘magic’ point or protocol.

Last year I was treating someone for severe gastritis. Bowel movements were irregular to put it lightly, so many foods would cause pain, and overall the digestive system was not functioning properly. This patient had tried everything. She had seen specialists, nutritionists, naturopaths, and nothing was really improving the severe discomfort she felt on a daily basis. She tried acupuncture, and though feeling much better after one treatment isn’t the norm, she did.

She continued for a while and felt better after every treatment. It is also fun to note that as an acupuncturist, when I see such a strong bodily response during treatment, it is quite satisfying. The skin around certain needles were often red and itchy both during and after treatment. Not every point had this reaction, but the points which their indications were about releasing heat in the digestive tract did. While I perform treatments I talk with my patients about their lives, not only regarding their specific health goal, but also their day to day lives.

This particular patient was coming in originally for digestive support, but she mentioned that her and her partner were also trying to conceive for quite some time. I explained the different ways acupuncture can help with fertility, but also didn’t want to necessarily change my treatment plan since she was coming in for digestive support. But remember, we treat the imbalance in the body. Most people think of fertility and they think of blood, hormones, and specific sex organs. But ultimately it is all about the body being in a state of homeostasis. Digestive organs and the uterus are physically both very close, and moreover when there is such a disharmony in an organ system, other systems will also be affected. So my goal was ultimately to help with the inflammation in that region in general. Needless to say, after only 2 months of treating her digestive issues, she also became pregnant.

I’m going to switch gears and mention a postpartum story.

Often patients at the clinic see both the chiropractor and the acupuncturist, and we love this, since they get complimentary benefits from both. Recently, Dr. Katrina invested in a Dolphin Neurostim and though this device has many benefits, scar release is particularly great. She tried it on a patient for her C-section scar and there were some pretty great results, but the scar tissue damage was also quite severe in this case. Dr Katrina recommended the patient try acupuncture and I was thrilled. This isn’t something I treat commonly but would love to since I know how beneficial it can be. Because of the severity of the scar tissue there was some pain, but also numbness in the lower abdomen. I first started the treatment with cupping. I would move the cup gently over her scar back and forth to help break up the scar tissue and help encourage more blood flow to the superficial layers of the skin. After a few minutes of performing that, I placed needles along the scar, but also in specific points in the abdomen and body to promote blood and qi flow since there were some pretty clear signs of stagnation. After a few treatments, not only did the scar improve dramatically in appearance, the discomfort had also ameliorated greatly.

Lastly, before you think that it might be difficult as a new mom to receive treatment, there is hope. I currently treat a new mom and she brings her little one with her. We have reclining chairs that we can use during treatment, and my patient comfortably reclines and holds her baby with the support of a pillow and I can still do a full body treatment. Of course not all babies are as quiet as this one, but if you are needing treatments and think you can’t leave your newborn, know that there are options.

Cheers to all the mothers, and mothers to be!

Chiropractic and Pregnancy

By Dr. Emilie Perras, Downtown Chiropractor

One of the most important times for a woman to be receiving chiropractic care is during pregnancy! From the moment of conception your body goes through a series of remarkable changes. Some are easy to spot: a growing belly, changes in posture, and the changes in gait – that characteristic pregnancy “waddle”.

What we cannot see are the millions of different hormonal changes and chemical reactions occurring both in the mother and the developing baby, all of which are controlled and coordinated through the nervous system. Now more than ever, during pregnancy you need a nervous system that responds immediately and accurately to changing requirements in all parts of your body, and therefore you need a healthy spine!

Chiropractic can add comfort.

A large percent of all pregnant women experience back discomfort/pain during pregnancy. This is due to the rapid growth of the baby and an interference to your body’s normal structural adaptations to that growth. Pre-existing unnoticed imbalances in your spine and pelvis become overtaxed during these times. The added stresses lead to discomfort and difficulty while performing routine, daily activities.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can relieve and even prevent the common discomforts experienced in pregnancy. Specific adjustments eliminate these stresses in your spine, restore balance to your pelvis and result in greater comfort and lifestyle improvements. Many moms we see who didn't get adjusted for their first baby, notice a much more comfortable pregnancy with #2 under chiropractic care!

Comfort for your baby, too.

As your baby develops, your uterus enlarges to accommodate the rapid growth. So long as the pelvis is in a balanced state, the ligaments connected to the uterus maintain an equalized, supportive suspension for the uterus. If your pelvis is out of balance in any way, these ligaments become torqued and twisted, causing a condition known as constraint to your uterus.

This constraint limits the space of the developing baby. Any compromised position for the baby throughout pregnancy will affect his or her optimal development. Conditions such as torticollis occur because a baby's space was cramped in utero.

If the woman's uterus is constrained as birth approaches, the baby is prevented from getting into the best possible position for birth. Any baby position even slightly off during birth will slow down labor, and add pain to both the mother and baby. We work specifically with your pelvis throughout pregnancy restoring a state of balance and creating an environment for an easier safer delivery.

Preparing for a Safer Birth

Dystocia is defined as difficult labor and is something every woman wants to avoid. In addition to the pain and exhaustion caused by long, difficult labors, dystocia leads to multiple, medical interventions which may be physically and emotionally traumatic to both you and your baby.

Some of these interventions are the administering of Pitocin, the use of epidurals, painful episiotomies, forceful pulling on the baby's fragile spine, vacuum extraction, forceps and perhaps even C-sections. Each of these procedures carry a high risk of injury to you, your baby or both! However, all of these procedures used to hasten the delivery process can be avoided if delivery goes more smoothly to begin with.

When reviewing the obstetric texts, the reported reasons for dystocia are caused by pelvic imbalance and its resulting effects on your uterus and your baby's position.

Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy restores balance to your pelvic muscles and ligaments and therefore leads to safer and easier deliveries for you and your baby. Additionally, the chiropractic adjustment removes interference to the nervous system allowing your uterus to function at its maximum potential. Published studies have indicated that chiropractic care does in fact reduce labor time!

If you are pregnant or know someone who is, get them to a prenatal chiropractor!

I was talking to a mom of a baby and toddler this week, sharing about all the books on teenagers that I am currently reading. There are some amazing resources out there.

It reminded me of the best book I read about parenting children: How to Talk so Kids Will Listen & Listen so Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlich. A great foundation book - highly recommend it!

If you read it, let us know what you think 🙂

And if you need the teenager books, send me a DM: @dremilieperras
