July at Oaktree: Kids Month, Backpacks, and Canada Day!! 🍁🍁

By Dr Marie-Pier Sauriol, Stittsville Chiropractor

July is kid's month at Oaktree! It's no mystery that we love to care for whole families - and that includes the littlest members too! In this newsletter and our social media posts this month, you'll find lots of helpful tips to help keep even those small spines healthy!

As family and pediatric chiropractors, we have lots of extra training and experience helping babies and kids grow to their full potential. Gentle and specific chiropractic adjustments remove interference to the nervous system, which can help with countless things including constipation, fussiness, concentration, and so much more!

All 32 NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff to ensure optimal performance - isn't that something you would want for yourself and your kids?!

The Family Chiropractic Lifestyle

By Dr. Katrina Greer, Orleans Chiropractor

I want you to imagine what the healthiest family looks like, YOUR healthiest family. The possibilities are endless, and what we know, is that regular chiropractic care should be a part of that vision. In the blink of an eye, you could make a lifestyle choice that would impact the quality of life of your family, and of those who love you. If they started today, imagine what a year of chiropractic care could mean for your child?

Lifestyle chiropractic is about keeping your mind, body, spine and nervous system functioning at their full potential. This means keeping your resistance high, your stress levels low, energy balanced, and allowing your brain and body to communicate efficiently. Now, doesn’t that sound like something you’d want for your kids? To watch them thrive?

At each of our clinics, our priority is the health of your entire family. We want to see your kids thrive. Some of our chiropractors were fortunate enough to have had chiropractic care starting when they were babies. At our clinics, patients are still often surprised when we mention that we adjust kids, with the ideal situation having your babes checked at birth!

Even a natural delivery is not easy on a baby’s spine. If you notice arching of the spine, tight fists, a head tilt, fussiness, or colic - these are all signs that your babe’s nervous system is under stress. Birth causes subluxations to your baby’s spine, and the good news is it can usually be easily corrected by gentle chiropractic adjustments. These adjustments look and feel different than those used on adults. There are many approaches from light touch to instruments, and overall, babies and kids alike love getting adjusted. These adjustments remove stress on the body and help restore balance to their nervous system. This could look like better digestion, improved sleep, better feeds and more comfort for baby and mama.

Chiropractic care has a huge impact on the posture we see in school aged kids. Increased forward head posture impairs the amount and quality of information that can be sent to your child’s prefrontal cortex. What this means, is that chiropractic care has an impact beyond the apparent physical changes and can influence how the brain functions. In school, better brain body communication can lead to better focus, decision making, cognition, reading, learning and coordination.

Bonus Article: BACKPACK TIPS

Your child’s posture can also be influenced by their backpack and the weight they are carrying. Here are some tips below to ensure optimal backpack safety!

As a chiropractor, here are my top 5️⃣ tips to minimize the negative effects of back pack wearing on your posture! 👩‍🏫

1️⃣ Choose a backpack with wide, cushioned straps, and use both whenever possible. Those one sided laptop bags, or stylish packs with spaghetti straps are not great for your shoulders or neck ☝️

2️⃣ Grab a pack with many compartments! Try to place the heaviest items or furry friends near your torso 📚, and distribute lighter items toward the outside 📱. If your lunch is taking up majority of the pack, consider carrying a separate lunch bag 🍎

3️⃣ Use accessory straps if they are provided. Once again, this practice will distribute the weight toward your midback and off your upper shoulders. Make sure it's adjusted accordingly.

4️⃣ Aim to have the backpack carrying no more than 10-15% of your bodyweight ⚖ If your child weighs 50lbs, they should should not be carrying 20lbs 🙅‍♀️ A jacket or lunch can be carried or worn.

5️⃣ Lastly, look for a pack with proper ventilation. Our summers and even falls can be hot 🥵 and while commuting, if the pack gets uncomfortable, it may encourage one sided or improper use!

Scoliosis and Children (Good info for adults too!)

By Dr. Emilie Perras, Downtown Chiropractor

Before I was even a student kids would regularly get checked in school for scoliosis. They would bend forward and if one side of their ribs rounded more in a hump, then it was a sign for further testing. Such a simple test! However, it is no longer routine to check this in children, even though up to 5% of young people are affected by scoliosis.

What is scoliosis? It is when instead of growing straight, the spine develops a side-to-side curvature, usually in an elongated S or C shape. The bones of the spine are also slightly twisted or rotated.

The younger and sooner you check growing children and teens, the better for outcome and treatment options! If someone is done growing, we have way less chance of modifying a scoliosis. We can still support it and work on prevention, but really this is one case where the earlier the better!

Here are a few things to look for in your children as early warning signs: (If you see this in yourself or an adult, please also get to a chiropractor)

- Uneven shoulders

- Prominent shoulder blade

- Visible curve

- Uneven hips

- Uneven waist

- Lean to one side

- Pain

Scoliosis appearing in adolescence:

This is the most common type of scoliosis and appears during periods of rapid growth. Most cases have no known cause and are not hereditary. Many can be helped with chiropractic care. Some cases are more severe and can be referred for non-surgical treatments like custom bracing and exercise rehabilitation. We have a few great chiropractors in Ottawa who work with these cases. Last resort is surgery, but many could be avoided if found early.

If you notice any signs like uneven shoulders or hips, or a visible curve, don’t watch and wait!

In Case You Missed It: DIME FUN FACT!!!

Did you know, the weight of a dime is how much pressure it takes on the nerves to affect their function?

Why have one book when you can have more!! Dr. Emilie is recommending the following selection, in honor of kid's month:

  1. Well Adjusted Babies
For me, this was my pregnancy bible. I loved that it presented the more holistic approach as I found many mainstream books to be more medical. I generally try to do things more naturally so this helped balance out the other books. You may not agree with all of it, but there is value on reading different approaches. It has information on pre-conception, pregnancy, birthing and parenting!

  2. The 5 Love Languages of Children

  3. The 5 Love Languages of Teenagers
The languages are the same whether it's for children, teens or your partner. However, how you see and apply them will change. These are good ones!
