Subject: February @ Oaktree - mental health and love❤️

February News

In February we like to focus on mental health at Oaktree. Even though we work physically on people, the effects on the body are definitely emotional, mental and physical!

As our patients know, we call ourselves Oaktree because the oak tree has strong roots that dig deep. With strong, deep roots the Oak is resilient and able to endure harsh weather and difficulties. Our vision from the beginning has been to be a part of a person's life and health for the long term, to be a partner with them through good and bad - someone consistent.

We are still feeling the mental health stress and anxiety (and the physical effects!) of the last few years. Our own root systems are being tested. The nervous system is the master system and it’s important to be aware of all of our stressors so that we can give our bodies the opportunity to heal and grow naturally.  We are here for you!  Through thick and thin. It is our privilege to offer you support, guidance, healing and love. Thank you for choosing us.

WIRED BUT TIRED?

Written by Martin Perras, downtown acupuncturist

Feeling like you are going 100 miles an hour?  Physically tired but can’t shut off your mind at night?

Did you know that one of the techniques we use in acupuncture to help with stress and anxiety is to stimulate your vagus nerve.  The vagus nerve is the 10th cranial nerve and it is called the vagus nerve because it wanders all over your body.  Vagal or vagus nerve derives from the term “to wander" or vagabond.

It has the ability to effect many involuntary body functions, including your breathing, heart rate, digestion and much more.  It is also very much responsible for our parasympathetic nervous system which is your rest and digest state.

Too many responsibilities and a constant busy lifestyle can easily get our body stuck in a fight or flight state, which results in difficulty to go back into the rest and digest.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine we have found the the best way help regulate the nervous system and bring it back into parasympathetic is to stimulate a few points on the ear - one of the ares that is best to reach the vagus nerve. You can massage your ear and this can actually have a calming effect.  If you’re not sure how to best massage your ear, speak with our acupuncturist and they would be happy to show you the best way to stimulate the vagus nerve manually. You can also try acupuncture on the ear if you haven't and feel the effect within minutes.

If you struggle with anxiety, stress and depression, we encourage you to give acupuncture a try.  Taking the time for an acupuncture session is something that might help break up the busyness.  You will find the experience surprisingly relaxing.
