BACK TO SCHOOL!

By: Dr. Veronica, Orleans Chiropractor

Summer has been flying by and back-to-school season is already upon us (sorry if we're the first to say it.....!)

For many families this means getting the kids ready for another exciting school year.

Let’s look at some chiropractic tips to help make this season a healthy and happy one.

The back-to-school season brings exposure to new bacteria and pathogens so keeping your child’s immune system defense strong is important. Adding fruits and veggies to your child’s diet can add great sources of immune boosting vitamins and minerals. Chiropractic adjustments have also been shown to help boost your child’s immune system by ensuring your child’s nervous system is functioning at 100%.

During this new school year it is important to take the time to make sure your child’s back pack correctly fits and is worn properly. Ensuring your child has the correct size backpack and the weight is evenly distributed from right to left can help avoid spinal related pain and injury. It not uncommon to see symptoms like headaches, upper shoulder pain and lower back discomfort result from improper backpack safety. Consistent chiropractic care can help with that!

With packed schedules, sleep can often take the back seat. Sleep is our body’s time to heal and repair from the stresses of daily life. If your child is not getting enough sleep their body and brain function can suffer. To help ensure enough rest, stick to the same bedtime every night so there is less trouble waking up early for school during the week. Also switching from screen-time 2 hours before bed, to reading or drawing or bath time, can help your child naturally produce enough of the sleepy time hormone, melatonin, for deeper sleep.

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer and let us know your back-to-school tips and tricks next time we see you!

I am Here to Listen

By Veronique, Orleans & Downtown Acupunturist

I am here to listen.

For many of my patients, acupuncture is a last resort. They have talked to doctors, specialists, physiotherapists, naturopaths and so on. After months of treatments, and thousands of dollars spent with no changes, patients feel discouraged, and more importantly, not heard.

I have found that communication is often the biggest issue with our healthcare system. Perhaps as an acupuncturist I listen differently than an MD (some, not all) because I know the significance of emotions and trauma and how it can manifest itself as physical symptoms. I’ve treated rib pain by focusing on anxiety, breathing difficulties caused by loss of a loved one, digestive issues linked with overthinking, difficulty sleeping caused by too much “happiness” (rather the inability to focus on true joy and scatter false happiness everywhere). Listening to someone's story is imperative in my practice. It is a different kind of listening than a casual conversation –  during that initial consultation, I want to be able to understand why you are coming in, what you have tried so far, and why these things haven’t worked. Perhaps other practitioners were not asking the right questions. And I do not claim to always ask all the correct ones either. But I make an effort to listen and be open to receiving the information given.

I would also never want the patient to feel rushed as they are spending their time and money, and choosing me to help them with their health goal. I am there to help them, but it is also a privilege to be chosen by them. I must say that I feel fulfilled when my patients tell me that they feel better after even just a few treatments. They also share their success stories with their friends and relatives. I have one patient in particular that has already referred 3 other patients my way and continues to do so. “They” say healing starts from within, but surrounding yourself with like minded people who want to improve their health is also important. So sharing the gift of heath, practitioner to patient, or patient to future patient, truly warms my heart and helps everyone even just a little bit at a time.

Things to remember: every patient has a different story. Some come in with very specific goals and do not require much more Q&A than during the first appointment. Some conditions can be treated rather quickly (ie acute pain). Occasionally patients open up a bit more with every visit. I also encourage patients to tell me how they feel between each treatment as perhaps something has happened that might change my choice of treatment.

Listening is imperative and is the most useful tool I use every day.

Any questions? Feel free to email me veronique@oaktreehealth.ca or book a complimentary Q&A session with me to see if acupuncture can help you and your health goals.

What Kind of a Body Will You Have Next Year

By Dr.Arno Burnier, Doctor of Chiroprtactic

Contrary to popular belief, our physical body is never older than seven years! This is due to the fact that the body recreates itself constantly. Tissue cells die and are replaced by new ones. Every second we lose about three-and-a-half million red blood cells. There is nothing to worry about though, for another three-and-a-half million are born to replace the old ones. Ninety-eight percent of the atoms present in our body today will be gone within one year and replaced by new ones. The body is more like a river of constantly renewed tissues rather than a frozen sculpture of decaying matter.

Skin cells live for seven days, heart cells for ninety days, while bone cells have a thirty-six month life span. There is a different life expectancy for every type of tissue cell depending on its function and location in the body. Life energy, the creative force, is constantly at work recreating our tissues and organs. Life energy or 'human electricity' travels via the nerve system to reach every single tissue cell in the body.

When nerves are compressed or irritated, there is a loss of life, abnormal function results and the reproduction cycle of cells is altered. We either have a slower rate of reproduction which is degeneration or decay, or we have a faster rate of turnover which is uncontrolled growth or tumors.

The question we must all ask ourselves is, what kind of body are we going to have next year? Is it going to be a healthier one or a sicker one? Is it going to replace itself normally or abnormally? Is it going to express more ease or dis-ease? If already in a state of degeneration and decay, is it going to keep going downhill, or is it going to rebuild itself? If a state of dis-ease exists, are we going to give our body the potential to heal itself, or are we going to allow it to express more dis-ease?

Chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture both help clear blockages that interfere with nerves and life force expression. The result is a body that has the potential to reproduce itself normally and recover by healing itself.

Healing is creation, and the creative spark of life. Consistent adjustments and acupuncture release life force by keeping the channels open. In time the body can recover and express better health.
