Subject: April @ Oaktree :) allergies and "the Dowager's hump"

April @ Oaktree

Happy Spring!

We finally made it!! I read somewhere that this winter has been the darkest winter in over 80 years!! It wasn’t easy for most of us but I am proud of you for making it through. We are finally seeing flowers bloom, snow melting, warmer weather, and brighter days!

April is allergy month and I am the perfect person to be introducing this newsletter. Since I was a child, I have always suffered from seasonal allergies.

As I grew up I found ways to manage my symptoms naturally and incorporate treatments that allow my body to adapt to the changing seasons. I wanted to share a few of my favorites with you here:

  1. Ingesting local honey all year round: Micro-dosing local honey and being exposed to the allergen daily can allow your body to adapt and reduce symptoms over time.

  2. Acupuncture: Symptom and congestion relief.

  3. Chiropractic Care: Allows your body to heal and adapt to your environment

  4. Anti-inflammatory diet: Green leafy vegetables, good fats, nuts, and proteins.

  5. Supplements and herbs

I hope these tips can help you thrive this spring and enjoy every moment!

Can Chiropractic Care Help With Sinus Problems?

By Dr. Veronica, Orleans Chiropractor

What is Sinusitis?

Your sinuses are made up of eight hollow spaces in the bones of the forehead, cheeks, and temples. When you’re healthy you have open sinuses that are lined with a layer of mucus that filters out dust, dirt, and other pollutants you inhale while adding moisture, so you don’t feel dried out.

Sinusitis is the condition when the tissue lining of your sinus cavities becomes inflamed, which then blocks mucus and pollutants from draining properly and causes increased pressure, clogged nasal passages, and potentially even swelling in the face or eyes. This build-up of fluid can also cause intense pressure along the face’s sinus pathways.

Because sinusitis is most often caused by allergies and the common cold, most people rely on over-the-counter medications to relieve these symptoms. This can help with temporary inflammation, but when people suffer from chronic sinus problems, these medications do not address the root cause of the issue.

If you have a cough along with your sinusitis symptoms you may find that coughing is causing a lot of tension and stress throughout your body but particularly focused in the joints. If you have a cold or infection that causes chest congestion and phlegm you’ll be happy to hear that a chiropractor can help with that as well as your sinus pain and congestion.

Chiropractic Care and Sinusitis

Typically, when someone comes in for sinus treatment, they’re carrying tension in their neck and midback and require an adjustment. This adjustment will help with the tension and also stimulates the nerves leading to the sinus cavities to promote healing.

When it comes to working directly on the sinuses, we focus on the maxillary and frontal sinuses. We can adjust the cranial bones themselves, or apply firm pressure across the forehead, nose, and cheek areas. This technique loosens mucus and gets it moving again!

Additional Treatments:

Another great addition to treating sinusitis is acupuncture! It can hep clear things out very quickly :) At home you can do warm compresses, self massage, or stretching.
