Subject: April @ Oaktree: Allergies, Skin and Easter!🐣

April: Allergies,

Skin, and Easter!

By Catherine Collier, Stittsville Acupuncturist

Hello!

This month Oaktree is focusing on allergies and our skin. It’s probably a perfect time to do so if you celebrate Easter and over indulged in chocolate like I did, and need a friendly reminder that what we put in and around our body can manifest in a variety of ways!

As many of you are experiencing, allergy season is here. If you’re reckless like me, allergy season is all year round if you are allergic to cats, yet also have one too many cats that live in your house.

Most people do not think of allergies or skin health and think chiropractic or acupuncture treatments, however these are two areas that can be effectively treated at our clinic. When you deep dive into allergies and skin health, we know that these are a symptom of a greater imbalance going on internally. Perhaps you, or someone you know has experienced “stress hives”, when the body has a physical reaction you can see and feel, from an emotional stressor. Or you may notice that when you are overtired your allergies get worse.

Acupuncture and chiropractic care help rebalance the nervous system and our hormone levels and ultimately it becomes easier to process what life throws at us, whether it be mold from snow melt, pollen or another rescue cat that needed a home!

Enjoy the information that follows, and if you know anyone struggling with skin issues or the upcoming allergy season, let them know that we can help!

Today, I wanted to share a personal story that has been a significant part of my life: my journey with allergies.

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with seasonal allergies year after year. It has always been a constant battle for me that I have done my best to manage holistically. Over the years I have incorporated a few important things that I would like to share if you can relate to the relentless changing of the seasons.

  1. Dietary Changes: Some foods may exacerbate allergy symptoms, while others can help reduce inflammation and boost immunity. Incorporating anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts), and spices like turmeric and ginger may help. Additionally, avoiding or reducing consumption of dairy, processed foods, and foods high in refined sugars may also be beneficial.

  2. Herbal Remedies: Certain herbs and supplements have natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate allergy symptoms. Examples include stinging nettle, quercetin, butterbur, bromelain (found in pineapple), and probiotics.

  3. Acupuncture: Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese healing technique, involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow and promote balance. Some studies suggest that acupuncture may help reduce allergy symptoms by modulating the immune response and reducing inflammation. (We certainly have seen it help many people at the clinics!)

  4. Chiropractic Care: Chiropractic adjustments aim to correct misalignments in the spine and improve nervous system function. Some individuals find relief from allergy symptoms through chiropractic care, as adjustments may help enhance immune function and alleviate stress on the body.

  5. Mind-Body Practices: Stress can exacerbate allergy symptoms, so practices like meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, and progressive muscle relaxation may help reduce stress levels and promote overall well-being. These practices can also support immune function and improve resilience to allergens.

  6. Essential Oils: Certain essential oils, such as peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender, and tea tree oil, have natural decongestant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that may help relieve allergy symptoms. They can be diffused, diluted and applied topically, or added to steam inhalation.

Remember that individual responses to these holistic approaches may vary, so it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your wellness routine, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications.

While the journey has been challenging, it's also been transformative, shaping my understanding of my own health and well-being. It's a constant reminder to me that wellness isn't just about treating symptoms but about nurturing a deeper connection with oneself and the world around us.

Allergies and Chiropractic Care

By Dr. Veronica, Orleans Chiropractor

Many people suffer from seasonal allergies.

But fear not!

There are plenty of allergy sufferers out there who have found relief with chiropractic care.

Because the air is filled with so much pollen in the spring, your body’s immune system goes on high alert. The body of those with seasonal allergies look at them as trespassers, and dispatches histamine into your nose throat, lungs and eyes – which is where the gunky buildup comes from. Histamines are supposed to get rid of the harmful things from your body.

However, the process of these allergies can leave you feeling worse.

You’ve probably taken a daily allergy pill, nasal spray, or other over-the-counter medicine. While these issues can help provide relief, they don’t actually treat the underlying issues.

Chiropractic care can help as we can ensure the immune system is communicating with the rest of the body correctly. Chiropractic adjustments and treatments release pressure that is put on the nervous system, allowing the immune system to work effectively and efficiently.

Both the respiratory system and the immune system rely on proper communication between the brain and spinal cord to coordinate and control their functions. If there is an interruption in that communication (i.e. a misalignment), the immune system may become compromised.

Chiropractors can identify things that might be disturbing how your body is working. Proper alignment can lead to clearer paths of communication, balancing things out with your immune system.
