Relief from Allergies and Skin Issues with Acupuncture

With the arrival of spring and seasonal changes, many people suffer from allergies, eczema, or other skin conditions. Did you know that acupuncture can be a natural and effective solution to alleviate these discomforts?

My First Experience with Acupuncture

I first discovered acupuncture because I was struggling with severe cat allergies. Constant sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion made it difficult to be around cats, even though I loved them. After trying various medications with little success, I decided to give acupuncture a try. To my surprise, not only did my allergy symptoms improve significantly, but I also noticed an overall boost in my well-being. This personal experience led me to explore the deeper benefits of acupuncture and eventually become a practitioner myself.

Acupuncture and the Immune System

Acupuncture is a practice in traditional Chinese medicine that helps restore the body's balance. By stimulating specific points on the body, it can strengthen the immune system and regulate the inflammatory response, thereby reducing allergic reactions and associated symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching.

A Holistic Approach to Skin Problems

Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and hives are often linked to internal imbalances, particularly in the liver, lungs, or digestive system. Acupuncture helps regulate these systems, reduce stress (which can exacerbate skin conditions), and promote better circulation of energy (Qi) and blood throughout the body, improving skin health.

What to Expect During a Session?

An acupuncture session typically begins with a thorough assessment of your overall health. The practitioner then selects acupuncture points tailored to your condition to restore balance and alleviate symptoms. Most patients experience a deep sense of relaxation during and after the session.

A Complement to Conventional Treatments

Acupuncture can be used alone or in combination with other medical treatments to optimize results. More and more studies show its effectiveness in relieving allergies and improving skin health in a sustainable way.

My Son Used to Be Allergic to Hazelnuts… Not Anymore!

You read that right! My son used to be deathly allergic to hazelnuts…no longer!!

Ever heard of Low Dose Immunotherapy (LDI)?

We use it for our son for nut allergies. It can also be used for seasonal allergies, dust and a few other allergies!

Our son developed allergies to nuts quite young. We’ve had one very scary episode including epipen use and ambulance. One possible solution given by allergists is desensitization therapy. However we were told it’s not guaranteed, the older you are the less effect it could have, biweekly appointments and extremely costly…and he was almost outside the optimal age for it by the time we were presented this option.

So we went to see a naturopath (originally for eczema which is now totally gone…) and were introduced to LDI as an option.

It’s an easy therapy because it’s a one-time dose of literally a drop that looks like water with a very low dose allergen in it. It only has to be taken every 8 weeks.

The cost at our naturopath clinic for an LDI dose is $45 (additional doses for other allergens within the same syringe is an extra $20). It can be covered by some insurance companies too.

We figured why not try? He’s been doing this for 3 years and is no longer allergic to hazelnuts! Hello Nutella, and Ferrero Rocher lol! He was also able to clear one other type of nut. We’ll keep going as long as he keeps improving. Each year we’ve retested he’s tested negative to a new nut! We go again in a few months to see what is next!

How does it work? At times, our own immune responses can be too heightened and LDI therapy can desensitize an otherwise ongoing response by our immune system. It is by far the most effective therapy our naturopath’s office has ever used for allergies. Once your immune system gains tolerance, the symptoms disappear!

I wish more people knew about it, so spread the word and share. I also like to highlight other types of health care that work really well with our more natural approach to health!
