Dear Nurses,

Happy New Year! 2020 promises to be an exciting year for nurses. While the World Health Organization declared it the Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the NNBA has been dedicated to advancing and promoting nurses roles in business every year since 1985. Nurse autonomy, flexibility, and financial freedom is something we rally around, and will continue to for 2020 and beyond! If you have ever thought about starting your own business, and amplifying your influence, make sure you are a member of the NNBA community of nurse entrepreneurs and business owners.

What are you looking forward to in 2020? Is this the year you author a book to share your message? Are you going to take your educational programs into hospitals and corporate settings? Are you going to advocate for increased diversity and health literacy to improve the world’s health and wellness? Are you going to create a business serving the elderly in your community? Are you creating online educational courses? Have you decided to learn more about telehealth and its major impact on how healthcare services are provided? Is 2020 the year that you continue the momentum of 2019 or is it a time to regroup?

Tabula Rasa means clean slate, and each New Year is a clean slate of personal and professional growth opportunities! For 2020, you can design your new year or your next decade. It is said that we over estimate what we can achieve in a year, and underestimate what we can achieve in ten years. Many nurses view NNBA’s annual educational conference on entrepreneurship and career alternatives as a launch point for designing their career over the next several years. The strategies and tactics learned, and the connections made with peers and successful business owners, give nurses resources they can trust as they pivot their careers into owning their own business. Place September 25-27th on your calendars for #NNBA2020 Conference. We have many special events are planned for NNBA’s 35th Anniversary.

Some people play it safe with their New Year’s resolutions; others take it to the extreme.

Last year the three most popular New Year’s resolutions all had to do with diet and exercise, followed by saving more, and then learning a new skill or hobby. Such vague and common goals, however, are easily forgotten; 80% of resolutions are abandoned by mid-February, and only 8% are ever accomplished.

Instead, consider taking your 2020 goal to another level, one that will really force you to break unhealthy habits, break new ground, or beat personal records. Setting such lofty goals won’t just help you expand the limits of your own abilities—it will help keep you accountable.

After all, few will be bold enough to ask you about that 10 lbs. you said you’d lose this year.
I wanted to close out the year with a solo show looking ahead to the next one; let’s talk small business marketing insights for 2020.

While there have been some big trends in the world of marketing—things like AI—getting a lot of buzz, I’m not here to talk about those. Trends like that are often not relevant to small business owners. Instead, I want to cover what I think are the insights for 2020 to give you some things to think about, that can actually add to what may be your long list of planning elements.

Insight 1: Audio Content Will Prevail

I think audio content is going to be something that people need to really embrace for 2020. If you’re not podcasting already, now is the time to start. It’s a great way to produce content.
Wouldn’t it be awesome to hear what one of the greatest coaches on self-development had to say about gratitude? Well, here’s your chance.

The world-famous Dale Carnegie is an American author, lecturer, and a developer of renowned courses in public speaking, salesmanship, corporate training, self-improvement, and interpersonal skills. His most notable pieces of work “How to Win Friends and Influence People”, a best seller, and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living.

Here are 9 of Dale Carnegie’s most powerful quotes on gratitude:

1. “Remember, happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely upon what you think. So start each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for.”
