Our second featured article below is Patient Education Key as Home Medical Devices Pose Patient Safety Threat. With more care being administered within the home—a trend fueled in large part by the nation’s aging population, more patients and family caregivers are in charge of using devices like infusion pumps and ventilators. Clinicians would normally operate these devices in the hospital setting. Many nurse business owners, patient advocates, care managers, and senior care providers should increase patient and caregiver education about these devices. Subcontracting Success: Preparing for Lucrative Consulting Contracts

NNBA Featured Expert Blog- Nena Hart

Partnering with consulting firms can bolster your self-employment income while providing invaluable learning and networking opportunities. However, it's essential to understand the potential pitfalls faced by nurses who are accustomed to the security of employment, including guaranteed hours, benefits, and a set paycheck.

If you’re interested in exploring consulting options as a nurse and aren’t sure what that would look like for you, subcontracting is a great way to start. Subcontractor, independent contractor, or just “1099 “, are just different ways to work with an organization or another consulting firm without being an employee, yet still having structure created for and having a great amount of flexibility with how you do the work, and when.

The benefit of subcontracting is that since you’re an independent contractor, most subcontracts range from $75-$150 an hour. Just starting out I would expect to ask for around $75 an hour and go up from there. This can also depend on how specialized the project is and the skills that you’re using for it. If you are serving as an expert on a team for a highly specialized or niche area, you can easily start at $100/hr.

Patient Education Key as Home Medical Devices Pose Patient Safety Threat

Patient Engagement HIT

The move to hospital-at-home and home use of medical devices could be the biggest threat to patient safety this year, according to ECRI, prompting industry stakeholders to call for human-centered design on these devices and better patient and caregiver education for their use.

In its Top 10 Health Technology Hazards for 2024, ECRI called out usability and instructions as a threat to the proper use of at-home medical devices and, ultimately, patient safety.

Hospital-at-home models and other models promoting remote patient monitoring are making consumer use of medical devices more common, ECRI said. With more care being administered within the home—a trend fueled in large part by the nation’s aging population—more patients and family caregivers are in charge of using devices like infusion pumps and ventilators. Patients and their caregivers are taking the place of the clinicians and other medical personnel who would normally operate them in the hospital setting.
