Subject: NGLA Welcomes Tom Murphy as the Association’s First Paid Executive Director

NGLA welcomes Tom Murphy as the Association's first paid executive director, effective August 1. In recent years we've explored exciting possibilities for the future of our association, and we realized we need to enhance NGLA's staffing to help us deliver on our mission. Through these conversations, we are excited to grow our NGLA family with the creation of a paid executive director position. As NGLA continues to grow and evolve, one thing remains unchangeable: We are a volunteer-driven organization that provides a sense of family and community for our many interfraternal supporters. This new role puts our volunteer leaders in a position to be successful in delivering our signature leadership conference while growing resources for our diverse interfraternal communities.

For nearly 30 years, Tom Murphy has been a vigorous advocate for “fraternity done right.” He has been passionate about the many positive impacts it has on the lives of members. Tom is a proud member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity, where he joined the Mu Alpha chapter at Susquehanna University in 1993. Quickly after graduation in 1994, he volunteered for the fraternity and assisted with the re-establishment of the Nu Beta chapter at the University of New Hampshire. He was selected to serve on Phi Mu Delta’s National Council in 1996, eventually serving as vice president and national president of the fraternity. During this time, he served as the fraternity/sorority advisor at Gustavus Adolphus College, Lycoming College, and Monmouth University before accepting the position of Executive Director of Phi Mu Delta in 2006. During his tenure as executive director, Phi Mu Delta flourished by tripling its membership, doubling the number of chapters, and instituting forward-thinking leadership programming. Tom has been recognized by his peers for his leadership and interfraternalism with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors' Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Award as well as NGLA’s Phillipi Award and Guenzler Award. He has served on the North-American Interfraternity Conference’s Governing Council and currently sits on the board of directors of the Fraternity Executives Association.

“NGLA has been like a second home to me. I can still recall bringing my first delegation from Lycoming College to Pittsburgh in 2002. NGLA was a place where my students who were affiliated with local organizations were made to feel as welcome as those from national groups. The clear diversity and support for different ways to be Greek was on full display. Many of my deepest friendships have been formed at NGLA, and I was always proud to bring delegations and support Phi Mu Delta brothers on their leadership journeys each February. The realization that I will now be able to bring my love and skills to NGLA as its executive director is truly a dream come true. I look forward to working with the board of directors, amazing volunteers, and staff to take NGLA to the next level of education and support for our Northeast communities.”

Farewell to Outgoing Executive Director

The Northeast Greek Leadership Association offers great appreciation for Michael Davis, our outgoing executive director, whose two-year term will conclude in June 2023. Katie Hartmann, assistant executive director, states, “Michael has offered his time and talents to the NGLA board of directors as our executive director and was instrumental in the change of our business model. His leadership has set up NGLA for a bright future and we are glad he will still lend his expertise to the board as a member after he completes his term as the executive director."
